Mayor Williams urges relief for D.C. doctors
The Washington Times ^ | 5-5-05 | Brian Westley

Calling the rising cost of medical liability insurance "unacceptable," D.C. Mayor Anthony A. Williams yesterday urged the D.C. Council to provide some relief for doctors. He introduced the Health Care Reform Act of 2005, flanked by physicians and other medical officials who said they are being forced to practice elsewhere, making it more difficult for city residents to get adequate health care. "We have the dubious distinction of having among the very highest medical liability insurance premiums in the nation and the highest jury awards in the nation," Mr. Williams said.

Where no one has any real responsibility.

Which is funny since that's basically what they're doing.

Just like HMOs are basically private versions of socialized medicine. That's why 10 years ago Dems *loved* them when they were starting out. Now they hate them as somehow representing "capitalist greed". Instead of seeing it's the "socialization" aspect that causes all those HMO problems.

I'm sure DC is seriously socialized beyond just "insurance rates". It's basically the "I want everything for nothing" attitude that drives all this.

If there was ever need of absolute proof that BIG government does NOT WORK, the District of Columbia is it.

Half of the city still looks like it was bombed just last night by elements of the US ARMY 8th Air Force.

DC has the toughest gun laws in the nation and zillions of crimes committed with guns. Gunplay in DC is like a varsity sport.

At least Mayor Williams is not the played out junkie that Marion Barry was during his last term as mayor. I applaud the Mayor Williams for at least acknowledging the problem.

Perhaps he should ask John Edwards for some suggestions, ay?

Most doctors in D.C. have LONG since moved a couple of miles to Virginia or Maryland.

They're looking to move out of Maryland now.

Absolutely true. You can cut your crooked shyster tax, oops I meant professional liabity insurance by 40% by moving from MD to VA.

I have a doc friend who was just up in DC this week for political action meetings. She said tort reform is on the way.

And guess who is siding with the docs on medicare reform? Hilliary. That women is up to something bad. I can just smell it.

Capitol Hill this week is saying 9 states are in crisis. Supposedly Bush is really pushing for tort reform.

The nation's trauma care system has been destroyed by the John Edwards Trial Lawyer, Inc. wing of the democrat party.

Yep, but it's more than just trauma care. First started with OB, then trauma, now the cost of malpractice in all fields has skyrocketed in some states.

I "retired" to look after my kids. When I looked into going back part time I discovered that after paying for malpractice, it wasn't economically feasible. Why work for a pay scale a little higher than a high school grad.

I would rather spend the time with my family and not owing the government money. I could be a big chunk of change for the feds and the state if they would make it worth my while, but they haven't. So be it.
