Retired Army Col. David Hackworth, a decorated Vietnam veteran who spoke out against the war and later became a journalist and an advocate for military reform, died Wednesday in Mexico, where he was receiving treatment for bladder cancer, his wife said. He was 74.

"He died in my arms yesterday morning," his wife, Eilhys England, said Thursday.

Hackworth, a syndicated columnist for King Features, advocated a streamlined military and improved conditions for troops.

Last time I heard that was when I fell off my rickshaw. :)

Wow, I never would have guessed he was 74. I thought he looked much younger.

Exactly. Quacks in Mexico who offer false hope (for a price) for people who are beyond treatment ...

As I recall Steve McQueen went to Mexico for treatment of his condition (cancer?) ... in any case it was unsuccessful and he returned to the U.S. and died a short time later.

Wow, I had no idea he was sick. I disagreed with him on many things, but always respected his service to our country. God rest his soul.

We are a nation of weak sisters that blind ourselves by our incessent need to maintain the pretence we are good.

Of course it is so much more humane to turn prisoners over to the control of countries not so incumbered.

Which was worse?

Sorry to hear it. He was wrongheaded about a lot of issues, and IMO embittered by the realization that the only way he was going to get a star is if somebody paid to have it recorded in book form in the US Copyright Office, but he was a good patriot.

"He later served as a field grade officer in Vietnam, where he was frustrated at being overruled by his superiors, so he went on TV in 1970 to badmouth his superiors and the media had a field day. He loved the attention and basked in every minute of it."

...and that, ladies and gentleman, is why he never became GENERAL Hackworth.

Thanx for the info.
However, I just spoke with someone who remembers Hack saying he was at Anzio, and they were really surprised at the time, becaused he looked much younger than their father who served in WWII.

Well, isn't the first time people doubted his truthfulness.

One thing that has steeled my resolve in beating the liberals is that I compare their hatred with the hatred of the Nazis....there's not much difference.

Liberals are dangerous people because of their conceit, hatred, and disregard for the law.

That defines an evil person.

Many people head south when their American doctors tell them that all treatment options have been exhausted.

One who who comes to mind is actor Steve McQueen. He died in a Mexican cancer clinic undergoing a radical treatment for lung cancer that was diagnosed as terminal in the U.S.

"wasn't Col. Hackworth one of the most, if not the most, decorated soldier in Vietname and the journalist who noticed that Boorda was wearing an incorrect decoration"

Hackworth was involved in the Borda story. I don't know if he actually broke it - but he was writing a story for Newsweek when Borda killed himself. I think Hackworth asked Borda for an interivew. Borda had been wearing a V-device on the Navy version of the ARCOM. He had clearly earned the award - but the device was in question. Did not seem like a really big deal. Ultimately, a Navy board decided that Borda was, in fact, authorized to wear the device. Too late for the admiral, however. Then somebody questioned the fact that Hackworth listed a Ranger tab as an award on his web site. Hackworth never went to the Q-course. Hackworth said that he thought earned the tab by being assigned to a "Ranger" unit in Korea. Hackworth had to pull the reference from his web site.

Hackworth was very award-conscious and listed all of his awards on a web site. He did earn a lot of awards and multiple purple hearts. He spent alot of time in "About Face" writing about his awards. All that being said, he served his country in WWII (as an underage merchant mariner), Korea and Vietnam and you've got to tip your hat to that.
