Saying "acrost" for "across" or "ax" for "ask" are today considered to be part of black English.

As much as I love the man, Dr. Sowell is dead wrong here.

There IS no such animal as "black English."

The only kinds of English are standard and incorrect. Some of my students chose to disregard this fact, and their paper grades showed it.

Oddly enough, every single one of 'em began writing more or less correctly after only one failed paper.

Sowell seems to agree with you, which is why he said "considered black English."
