Mexico's leftist firebrand feasts on enemies' blunders
Corpus Christi Caller-Times ^ | May 4, 2005

The credibility of Mexico City's left-wing mayor, Andres Lopez Obrador, as a contender in next year's election for the presidency of Mexico grows stronger by the day. And it is his enemies who have so far proven to be his most bankable asset.

Obrador, who will almost certainly be the presidential nominee of the leftist Demo-cratic Revolutionary Party, is a charismatic populist who has a solid base of support among both the urban masses and the rural campesinos, both of which groups remain marginalized and largely cut off from the prosperity of the middle and upper classes.

However, it was a clumsy maneuver by his political enemies that contributed most spectacularly to his rise. President Vicente Fox and his National Action Party (PAN) made common cause with the dinosaurs of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) to file contempt of court charges against Obrador for his purported defiance of an order to halt a road construction project. The idea, evidently, was to furnish a pretext to keep Obrador off the ballot.

In fact, the stratagem was a gift to Obrador, who milked for it for all it was worth. Fox hastily backed away from the maneuver, and it appears Obrador, currently leading all the presidential contenders, will have a straight shot.

Defenders of the establishment can only hope he will demonstrate a propensity for folly equal to their own - but that's a slender reed indeed on which to pin hopes that Mexico can be rescued from the dismantling of the (admittedly unpopular) reforms that have made that nation one of Latin America's economic powerhouses.

Pray that Vicente Fox is voted out of office.

Putting a good old fashioned Communist in power in Mexico may provide the impetus Bush needs to get serious about border security. Fox was the best hope for Mexico in a long time. Too bad he turned out to be, well a lying politician who will say anything then do as he pleases (no different than many of our own).

The current crop of illegal Mexicans in this country is responsible for the money that is running the Mexican government today. Bush will have both means and motiviation to cut that off.

Fox is limited to one six year term. His wife, Sahagun, can run, however.

It seems to me that our relations with Mexico at this point are all about oil. Venezuela, too.

The problems in South America and Central America are a good counterpoint to the Bush argument that all people desire freedom and that the movement towards "democracy" will necessarily engender a peaceful world. The record shows that every thuggish dictatorship down South, from Argentina's Peron, to Brazil's Lula, to Venezuela's Chavez, to the new leftist kid on the block from Mexico, was duly elected by the will of the majority of the people from those countries. Not to mention the Canuckleheads from Canuckistan and their ages-old love affair with the Liberals. It takes more than "democracy" for freedom to exist. It takes a people who desire it.

Q: How do you know a Mexican Presidente is crooked?

A: He is alive.

I have long believed that if the US wants to go around killing off dictators and forcing policy upon countries, we should start in Mexico.

Having such a horribly corrupt government within driving distance is a huge threat to our national security.

That seems to exclude about half of Us, are those of Us born with the "freedom gene" expected to go down without a fight?
What do You do when a democratic majority chooses security over liberty? What will We do?

If Mexico is such an economic powerhouse then why are all their people trying to leave?

I don't believe this guy Obrador is going to be any different than any of the other El President es of Mexico.

The corruption in Mexican governments are so ingrained that they will never change. The only way it willñl is if the government starts executing corrupt official's by firing squad. Pretty hard to do when everyone on the firing squad is corrupt too.

SwinneySwitch,

I had heard that the Mexican President was limited to one six year term. But I thought I had read recently that Fox was running.

Are you saying his party is running his wife??

Gotta be a reason why Bush is up his A**, just like he is up Prince Abdullah's.

Fox encourages illegal immigration, and Abdullah's right hand man ebcourages Saudi's to go to Iraq and kill Americans...and these are our "friends."

Vicente Fox and Martha Sahagun de Fox. She used to be the Presidential spokesperson before they were married and could be the candidate, but he says she doesn't want to run.

Maybe you heard it here first!
