Jaruzelski recalls Honecker's 'disgusting' kisses Tue May 3,11:01 AM ET
BERLIN (Reuters) - Being kissed by East German Communist leader Erich Honecker was "disgusting," former Polish communist leader General Wojciech Jaruzelski was quoted as saying Tuesday.
In an interview with Germany's Die Welt newspaper, Jaruzelski said that meetings with Honecker always began with hugs and fraternal socialist kisses on the cheeks.
"I exchanged many embraces with Honecker. He had this disgusting way of kissing," Jaruzelski, who was prime minister of Poland from 1981 to 1985 and president from 1985 to 1990, was quoted as saying. Honecker, who ruled East Germany from 1971 to 1989, died in 1994.
Reprints of photographs showing grey-haired, bespectacled Honecker kissing cheeks with Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev or Mikhail Gorbachev are part of the popular culture in Germany.
Artist Dmitri Vrubel's picture of Honecker and Brezhnev kissing each other on the lips, painted on a section of the Berlin Wall, is one of Berlin's most popular tourist attractions.

Its a common practice for men of Eastern European background to exchange kisses on the cheeks as a gesture of affection. My father and I still exchange kisses to show mutual affection. And no, its not a gay thing. If the kiss is just for show, there's no warmth behind it and I never kiss for the damn cameras.
