If I remember right, it always said Episode IV in the opening crawl thingy. Only if you didn't see it in its initial release. The "Episode IV - A New Hope" was added as a retitled rerelease just prior to the release of The Empire Strikes Back.

You are correct. I recall that it said "Episode IV" in the 1970's.
