LOS ANGELES (AP) - Mayor James Hahn began airing his first TV ad of the runoff mayoral campaign Tuesday - a blistering attack on the character and trustworthiness of front-runner Antonio Villaraigosa.
The 30-second spot, running on broadcast and cable stations, faults the city councilman for raising thousands of dollars from Florida contributors. Using photographs of newspaper headlines, the ad points out that the county district attorney is reviewing some of those donations.
A shot of Villaraigosa appears briefly in the ad, in which he says, "As Mayor, I will lead by example." A narrator responds sarcastically, "The Villaraigosa example of special favors for special contributors."
"Los Angeles just can't trust Antonio Villaraigosa," the narrator states.
Hahn launched his advertising campaign with two weeks to go until the May 17 election, hoping to turn around polls that show Villaraigosa leading by a wide margin. Villaraigosa has been running TV commercials since mid-April.
The Hahn ad goes to one of the central issues in the race.
The candidates, both Democrats, have been trading accusations over trust for weeks. On Monday, Villaraigosa began running a TV commercial that sought to put the mayor on the defensive over an ongoing corruption probe at City Hall.
Prosecutors are looking into allegations that administration officials traded city contracts for campaign donations. But Villaraigosa found his campaign under scrutiny last week, and he returned $47,000 in donations from workers of two Florida-based companies.
The county district attorney said Friday he was opening a preliminary inquiry of the Villaraigosa donations, following news reports that several of the workers appeared confused when asked about their checks.
Villaraigosa's campaign manager, Ace Smith, called Hahn's ad "desperate lies from a desperate man."
Analysts expect the final two weeks of the race to be an exchange of scathing TV ads, which each candidate looking to undercut the other's support.
Earlier Tuesday, Villaraigosa picked up the endorsement of Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., who also endorsed the councilman in his runoff against Hahn four years ago.
"He is a man of the people, and the people need him in Los Angeles now," the senator said at an elementary school in the city's Westwood area.

Yuck! You just had to do that, dincha? LOL.
Watch it or I'll post a Kerry Villagairosa pic.. lol
The man just exudes s-l-e-a-z-e! Kerry would naturally be an appropriate companion.
As does the Senator who endorses him, who claims, "He is a man of the people, and the people need him in Los Angeles now."
Haaaaaaaaaaa
I have better words for her... can't post here! LOL.
I haven't seen the specific poll numbers put it looks like blacks and whites are deserting Hahn.
If I recall correctly (in 2001), Hahn won primarily with these two groups.
If Hahn's numbers look this bad, I'll bet even whites in the Valley are deserting him.
Opinions anyone?
Two options: If you are rich, and live in a gated community, sit tight and stay as long as you can. Be sure that you are legally armed. However, move as many of your assets out of state as soon a possible. Second, if you are not well off, MOVE OUT OF SO. CAIFORNIA NOW!!
Going to the candidates debate
Laugh about it, shout about it
When you've got to choose
Ev'ry way you look at it, you lose
Do the same with out of the area papers, suggesting that they could scoop the L.A. Times.
See the (horribly designed) site mayorno.com for all the details on AV. Seriously, what's he doing on stage with someone who as much as advocated for ethnic cleansing of white people? Shouldn't the L.A. Times try to get to the bottom of that story?
See The truth about Antonio Villaraigosa for a summary.
And, if you have a website, link to that page, mayorno.com, and the AV pages at americanpatrol.com. Search at google for AV's name, and link to the pages that oppose AV from your site.
And, resist the temptation to say a bad word about Hahn or to say "they're both bad". Even if you think Hahn is horrible, AV would be much, much worse.
