Today, I am sad to say, one of my own senators took part in obstructing the will of the people. It was Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, who was the voice that stopped the John Bolton appointment from leaving committee and going to a vote in the Senate. The good senator wasn't able to take the time to make it to the hearings, but he certainly took the time to show up and obstruct the process.
The Los Angeles Times ran a story quoting Robert L. Bixby, executive director of the Concord Coalition, who stated that "Sen. Voinovich is not a showboat, but he is always willing to stand up for things he believes in even if it goes against the party line."
Riding the fence is not standing up for what you believe in. It is a coward that hides his opinions in committee. If Sen. Voinovich truly wanted to stand on his principles, then he would allow the constitutional process to work as it was intended and make his stand where it counts – with his vote. If Sen. Voinovich really is confused on the issue, here's a hint: If Barbara Boxer is congratulating you, you might want to rethink the situation.
Maybe Sen. Voinovich doesn't have what it takes to represent the people. Maybe he lacks the courage and fortitude to take a stand. Maybe he thinks – like so many other elected leaders – that he can do whatever he wants because the people won't remember when it comes time for re-election. The whole Beltway needs a wake-up call and the people of America are sounding the alarm.
Sen. Mike DeWine, also from Ohio, seems to be another U.S. senator with no backbone. In the lead up to the 2004 election, no one could seem to pin him down and get his stand on Issue One (Ohio's Marriage Protection Amendment). Many Ohioans confronted Sen. DeWine, myself included, about his lack of decision. "I think we need to look into it a little further," is not a stand. We the people want a yes or no. We want to know where our elected leaders stand. We are fed up with wishy-washy legislators who feel the need to peek around every corner before taking a stand on an issue.
Washington has become a restaurant that serves all sizzle and no steak. Congress spends days and weeks on issues like baseball and can't even get out of committee on real issues with substance like U.N. appointments and judicial nominees. The Beltway has become the ultimate reality show. CSPAN could easily pass for Big Brother. And our own party is ready to vote Tom DeLay right off the island. This is the kind of stuff that does breed desperate housewives.
We the people are disgusted with the incompetent display we see everyday coming out of Washington. While elected leaders like Sen. Voinovich hold their fingers to the wind, we the people are taking the initiative. When the Democrats tried to elect a traitor to the White House, it was the Swift Boat Vets who alerted we the people and we the people spoke loud and clear. When Washington refused to deal with the issue of protecting our borders, we the people, in the form of the Minutemen, confronted the issue head on and we, the rest of the people cheered them on.
We the people are forming organizations all over America and spending an enormous amount of our own money to confront issues that our elected leaders are either too cowardly or too arrogant to deal with. These organizations address the real meat-and-potatoes issues that Americans care about such as judicial nominees, tax reform, accountable spending and Social Security reform. We the people are speaking. Washington just isn't listening.
Our elected leaders make promises all the time when they are candidates, but once elected, they return to their vegetative states dallying in mud-slinging and their perpetual obstructive games. If our elected leaders were doing their job, organizations like the Minutemen would have never been formed. If Washington isn't going to do their job, then we the people will.
In 1776, when the government in America became oppressive and the people of America were not being represented, American families – men women and children – rose up and stood against the tyranny. Homemakers for America Inc. is here to put Washington on notice. Despite decades of being denied the knowledge of our nation's legacy and heritage, there are still people in America who know how great our nation is. There are still people in America who care. We aren't the MTV crowd. We aren't the Beavis and Butt-Head disciples. We are the real Americans – the ones who seek the truth and take the time to go to the polls on Election Day. And, Sen. Voinovich, we are watching.
In the 2004 election liberal groups spent millions of dollars trying to win over the MTV crowd with rock concerts and catchy slogans, but in the end what did it get them? It wasn't the Beavis and Butt-Head fans who showed up at the poles. It was us. Who are we? We are "we the people"! We still exist and we elected you to represent us. So stop trying to cater to the Liberal Democrats. They lost. You Won! And we are the reason why. Not them. Have some backbone and quit trying to get rid of the few like Tom DeLay who already have one. Stop worrying about the liberals and start paying attention to we the people. We've heard the sizzle, Sen. Voinovich, now where's the beef?

I'm also from Ohio and I was ticked off to no end that Voinovich had the nerve to show up to say delay the committee vote for John Bolton's nomination, when he couldn't find the time to show up to hear the testimony.
Stinking Dems were trying to railroad John Bolton and Voinovich gave them temporary legitimacy.
I'm disappointed in a lot of OH Republicans. Gov Taft is one that needs to go because he never met a tax he didn't like.
I'm not saying I would vote for a Demwit, but by the same token, I'm going to look for clues of RINOism before I vote for OH Republicans next time.

Depends who the people are. you may be one of the people but you are not one of THE PEOPLE.
Neither of our Senators are conservatives. Both of them say they don't support gun control, and then vote for gun control.
If there is a conservative issue before the Senate, neither can be relied upon.
As for Issue 1 and DeWine, he's from Yellow Springs, which is one of the most liberal areas of the State. It's not uncommon to see two men or women walking down the street hand in hand there.
He likely considers himself very conservative compared to the environment he comes from, however he's merely more conservative than the rabid far left, which doesn't say much.
