"I wouldn't wager on a senator being elected POTUS though... "

(in my best J. Kerry voice)

I was a govenor...before I was a senator.
---

Which is true, btw.

I too have been looking around at who is available for 2008 and have not found a lot to get excited about. I live in Colorado and while Owens has been a good Gov'nor, I just don't think he has the eggs for the next level. Though I don't know much about Allen, he leaps to the top of the heap for me, at least so far. Now, if a certain Ms. Rice was to change her mind, well....

I'm not real happy about that, but as far as I can tell it's an honestly held position, unlike all that "I believe it's wrong but should be legal" nonsense.

I'm not happy about it either, but I'll give him credit on one thing, based on his record, no one would have known that was his view if he didn't say it.

He could have lied, claimed to be full life all the way, and his record would show that he is, he's taking a risk by being forthright about it.

Most of the known-names are Senators; frequently Senators run for the presidency; seldom do Senators win the presidency.

Part of the reason he is viable, is that he is a former governor.

That said, its a little hard to figure out how much of him being considered viable isn't artifical be accident.

Senator Allen, Governor Pataki, Mayor Guiliani, and to a much less extent, Senator Clinton, all from the 2 major political media centers of the country where the press lives.

Its why Governor Warner (and not Governor Bredisen) is considered so viable by the dems, the media lives in NYC and Virginia (and a little over in maryland, so they can cover Washington DC).

It kinds of skews coverage of how high a canidates potential really is. Many of these so called "big names" aren't really that big, they are just getting the most of the coverage (alot of reporters fall into the habit of thinking that their own local politics is somehow national politics).

No way he'll get my vote.

I'm going to assume Senator Allen is telling the truth about his pro-life only after a couple of weeks belief.

The thing is, his record, is solid pro-life, and if he hadn't said it, no one would know.

This can only hurt him in the primaries, what I don't get is why go on TV, with a solid pro-life record, and say your not, for the first 2 weeks?

How sure are we that Sanford is out of the running?

I think that Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota will be the veep no matter who is the presidential choice.

Because the Senate is so wimpy they would never pass it.
But authoring legislation shows what your ideal is -- what you would do, or at least aim for, if you held higher office. Sorry, but I'd like to see his pro-immigration reform stance fleshed out in bill language.

Those grades are based on only two votes.
Because the Senate won't bring immigration reform legislation to the floor. (Or judges. Or anything else.) Because, as you correctly noted, to which I have no response except to gnash my teeth in frustration, the Senate are wimps.

90% of all politicians AVOID John And Ken because of the Illegal Alien questions.
And how sad is that, these guys won't even go on their show because they are too scared to even talk tough?

George Allen beat Mary Sue Terry by a HUGH margin in 1993. She was a two term Attorney General.

When the race started, he was 30 points down.

Sounds like a keeper! Hopefully we can win in 2008. We better be very agressive cause the Dems have lost twice and will not want to lose again!

What has he done for the conservative cause lately? What laws has he fought to repeal in the last year? What has he done? What has he said he plans to do?If Mike Pence from Indiana gets in this race and his only "conservative"
opposition is Allen, then ohmy!! I urge all of you to look up Mike Pence from Indiana. This is not a joke,Pence is the next Reagan!Sorry for my negative tone, but quite frankly the Santorum,Allen,Frist wing of the party makes me sick.

I would rather see Ann Coulter run with Newt Gingrich for her VP.

Capture in your mind's eye if you can a debate between Ann and Hillary!

My apologies for breaking the rule about pictures because:
a. I don't have any, and
b. I wouldn't know how to post a picture if I did. (Maybe one of you other Coulter fans out there could help me out.)

He hates taxes and government spending. His preference is normally to let the market handle whatever it is under discussion.

From his newsletter I got last week: "Just two weeks ago, I introduced legislation with Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Congressman Chris Cox (R-CA) which would permanently extend the four year Internet access tax moratorium we passed last year to keep State and local taxes off the Internet. As you can probably tell, one of my top priorities in the Senate is to promote the growth and opportunity of the individual enterprise zone that is the Internet."

When he was governor, one of his top priorities was to reduce the size and scope of government. Corin - do you know about the reduction of FTE's when he was governor? I don't remember the statistics. I'm pretty sure, IIRC, that the total number of FTE's and size of government payroll was reduced during his term. Please correct me if I'm wrong on that.

I totaly agree. I live in Northern Virginia(Alexandria) and what has Allen done to solve the illegal problem here? Is he just now jumping on the illegal imm. bandwagon? Come on, I don't care if its a Dem or Republican as long as they push for Amercian First attitude; I'm not voting for them. Simply: Deeds not words.

I don't think that is entirely accurate about Allen on the life issue. As a resident of Virginia and someone who has met and talked with him several times, I would say that he is at least as pro-life as Reagan was if not more.

The question of whether Owens can get his marriage in order is a legitimate one. I know of several conservatives in CO who were big backers of his who said they would never vote for him again. From what I heard (and this came from someone who was an elected statewide official in CO), Owens had -- shall we say -- multiple extracurricular activities. That is one of the reasons he bailed on running for the Senate last year and handed the seat to Salazar.
