May I share with you an email I received as part of an exchange with a criminal attorney I know who practices in Pinellas County?

About Schiavo. We are not a Theocracy. Judge Greer made the right and appropriate legal decision based on the facts before him. Our system, of laws is designed to withstand the lynch mob mentality displayed by many of the evangeliwhackos like Terry Randall. They are as endearing as Shihite Moslems. Why don’t they and their f[*]cking “culture of life” reflect upon: the Iraqi woman and children George W, Bush’s war has killed; Texas Governor George Bush executed 152 people; Jeb cared about Terry Schiavo but he sure did joy in killing Aileen Wuornos. Why do you get all huffy about a hyped charge of “starvation” when lethal injection (Jeb’s murderous MO) is simply a helluava a lot more overt. Have you ever noticed the correlation between arrested intellect and religious fervor? Thank God for the Jesuits and liberation theology!

I replied thusly:

Starving Terri Schiavo to death was not, under any conditions, and regardless of how finely one subdivides ones premises, "the right thing to do." If it was indeed "the right legal decision," that is an indictment that is deserved by an age that has subjected itself to laws but not to morals. St. Augustine said that "a law that is not just is no law, it is an act of violence." I say that the institution that enforces that act of violence is damned. There is such a thing as just violence (again, St. Augustine), and it was most certainly not the Terri Schiavo case.

What on earth has George Bush got to do with this? Nothing. He restrained himself as is fitting of the Executive. Contrast that to the federal/military action in seizing and deporting a little child despite the clearest wishes of his deceased mother. Have you forgotten that photograph of the man with the machine gun in Elian Gonzales' face? Is the irony lost on you?

I've discovered an obscene pattern in the Pinellas County legal system. Perhaps you are too close to see it.

I didn't bother to open his reply -- the one that is excerpted above was too inflamatory and irrational; couldn't imagine how the follow up would have been. I now consider a friend - I try to have liberal friends in the conviction that fellowship is stronger than political preferences - a friend lost.

He is right. The religious extremists in the GOP have done the party no favors with their demagoguing lies and their ignorance of the law in end of life cases, in particular this case. The fact that not one of Greer's rulings were overturned on appeal show that the Judge did the job I and the other citizens hired him to do here in Pinellas County. He followed the law. If he ran again he would be elected to office by a even higher majority then he was in Nov. We elect Judges to rule on Fl. law...not on how they feel or what the bible says. And after the backlash to the GOP for overstepping their authority in this case, the RR extremists won't get any more crumbs from the political table for some time. Any capital they had, they blew on this case while making some Christians look like Jerry Springer busybodies and ignoramus's.

Do you have any idea why slobs like this and other liberals in general feel compelled to use such filthy language in trying to make their "point"? I've noticed it seems to be the coin of the realm among the left to use filthy language when they attempt to engage in "debate". Why do you think that is? Do they think they feel it somehow makes them look "grown up" or "cool" do use these kinds of words? Do they think it somehow impresses their audience that maybe people would like they are being "adults" by using "grown-up words"? I actually think it makes them look childish, but then again, I was raised not to use gutter language in what is supposed to be rational discussion among adults.

It is impossible to be friends with active liberals.

Just like it is impossible to be friends with active addicts.

Jeb cared about Terry Schiavo but he sure did joy in killing Aileen Wuornos.

This is one of the stupidest things I have ever read in my life. It's even stupid for a leftist!

Aileen Wuornos lured men to their deaths, slaughtering them in cold blood. She put up a ridiculous defense that she, as a highway hooker, killed seven men in self-defense without ever alerting law enforcement. After being convicted and placed on death row, she finally admitted the truth of her malice aforethought, and was executed.

Terri Schiavo hurt no one, and there was only hearsay evidence that she wanted to die in her condition. There is no evidence that Jeb was 'joyful' after the serial murderer was put to death, but if he was, so flippin' what? What kind of mind is more pained by the killing of a confessed murderer than by the killing of his/her innocent victims?

I can't believe that someone with a brain that can't compute the difference between these two women passed the bar on his own. This idiot must have come to law school with a leftist agenda and crib notes tattooed on his arm!

a friend lost.

It is unfortunate that lawyers so often confuse law and justice.

Your friend was lost to the light before the first letter, but you did the right thing to try to open his eyes.

Many Germans went to their end at Nuremberg proclaiming that the law and orders were on their side failing to see that morality was not.
