WASHINGTON (AP) -- First lady Laura Bush stole the show with a surprise comedy routine that ripped President Bush and brought an audience that included much of official Washington and a dash of Hollywood to a standing ovation at a dinner honoring award-winning journalists.

The president began a speech late Saturday at the 91st annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner, but was quickly "interrupted" by his wife in an obviously planned ploy.

"Not that old joke, not again," she said to the delight of the audience. "I've been attending these dinners for years and just quietly sitting there. I've got a few things I want to say for a change."

While Cedric was speaking the camera panned over leftists in the audience. The high society types weren’t laughing at his ethnic jokes. Can you imagine what would happen to their leftist social standing if they were caught on camera laughing?

I noticed. Not everyone was laughing - even at a few of his Dr. Rice cracks. SHE was bustin' a gut like I've never seen before. She's adorable...

One of the reasons Laura's jokes were very funny is that NOBODY with working brain cells would ever believe she would see the Chippendales or act like a trailer trash toadie.

Now imagine if Hillary had tried to deliver those lines. The press wouldn't have known if she was being serious or just joking.

I DO believe Hillary was a "Desperate Housewife." She married Slick.

The first lady telling whore jokes to the national press? Say again?

Sorry, I didn't catch that. Could you clarify?

i don't think W's "devotion" to Laura was even remotely the point that farmer was making.

the white house press corps by and large are low class schlubs who should have been bleached and fire-hosed instead of 'entertained' was the point i believe

Anyone know if and when CSPAN will repeat this? I tuned in late for one airing and saw Cedric the Entertainer (who was pretty funny) but nothing else.

I get it fine.

No, actually, you don't. When the presidency goes pop culture to get a few laughs, you don't get it at all.

You are the one who doesn't get it.

This dinner is a 90 year old tradition, one that only recently has the general public been allowed to get a glimpse of. While the First Lady's participation last night is probably a first, the President's participation is not. I know people who have attended these things through all different administrations.........the only difference now is it gets televised.

Like I said - lighten up.

LOL, I'll bet the door man was surprised!

Another time, mom was behind a person making a purchase at a clothing store. She heard the clerk ask the person if it was going to be cash or credit. The person said they didn't believe in credit cards. Mom taps the person on the shoulder, and much to my dad's chagrin, says in her best voice filled with awe - "I do, I've SEEN 'em!"

We can argue the rest of the evening who gets it and who doesn't.

I'll be sure to put you in the column of .001% of Americans who know the rest of us don't get it.

You guys, I could totally keep you ROFL with stories about my mom, she was soooo funny, whether she meant to be or not. I miss her, and thanks for letting me share with you my stories, even though it was off topic to this thread.

It strikes me that the new generation of conservative yuppie-lites wants a Washington DC that has all 300 Dishnet channels, unlimited laughs, and low taxes. It doesn't want any absolute moral truth either, and, so when the First Lady degrades herself, and her husband's office, we are supposed to "lighten up." After all, man, we got a laugh!

The notion of the Bush family huddled around the TV set watching Hollywood pop culture just doesn't seem very comforting to me. Sorry.

You don't get it. Of course that's what she wanted you to think--that her comparison was ridiculous, but the very words in the first lady's mouth are like horse dung in a china cup. You don't debase the office, or the country, by giving the national press corps the White House equivalent of a bachelor party.

Horse dung in a china cup? Dial 1-800-Hillary and ask for the silverware and furniture.

Series, some folks like to enjoy life and have FUN. On your side of the fence, life must be awfully boring at the homestead, playing checkers and watching the corn grow.

I'm not some new generation yuppie type - but since you seem to so enjoy stereotyping, I'll give you some that came to mind after your first post on this thread - it's attitudes like yours that give conservatives a bad rap as being rightwing religious fanatics who wish to control everyone else's life.

Everyone has gotten the message you didn't care for the First Lady's performance last night, fine you didn't like, so drop it.

I think your mom and my mom must have been clones. One time at a Catholic funeral, (mom was Presbyterian) she asked one of the many Fathers present at the reception following the service, well if he's a Father (pointing her finger) and he's a Father (pointing to a different one) what do you call him? (pointing to a third) The Father cracked me up with "We call him Dad."
