WASHINGTON (AP) -- First lady Laura Bush stole the show with a surprise comedy routine that ripped President Bush and brought an audience that included much of official Washington and a dash of Hollywood to a standing ovation at a dinner honoring award-winning journalists.
The president began a speech late Saturday at the 91st annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner, but was quickly "interrupted" by his wife in an obviously planned ploy.
"Not that old joke, not again," she said to the delight of the audience. "I've been attending these dinners for years and just quietly sitting there. I've got a few things I want to say for a change."

Is that fancy talk for wet blanket?
You rooted for the mom in the movie/book "Carrie", didn't you?
LOL!
Oh please, you and Dirtboy are wasting everyone's time with your disengenuous outrage. Go back to DU and worry over the effects of moral relativity on the Democrat election prospects. Your logic is silly, but Saul Alinsky would be proud of you.
If you believe that the First Lady was acting like a slut, then you're not a rightwing religious fanatic, but you are however, a full blown idiot.
No kidding. I felt the same way when the Bush daughters did their routine at the GOP convention. I think they are cute looking but offer little else.
I am really tired of political families stumping for dad at the convention. It is difficult to say which one is worse. The only one I wanted to see speak for dear ol' dad was Al Gore Jr, but he was being arrested for speeding that week. Maybe a shot of him running across the stage, followed by a State Trooper?
You have twice referred to the First Lady Laura Bush as a "slut'
You are a sick and potentially dangerous individual
farmer18th,She read lines feed to her.Are you perfect?
I can't believe you actually posted that. Honestly, I cannot.
You, sir, have a sick and twisted mind.
I wish you would reserve just a bit of your indignation for Laura's cheapening of her husband's office. Do you seriously defend Laura's breaking all new ground by being the very first first lady to make a Chippendale's joke before a national audience? That was territory I thought we might have reserved for Hillary--but, no!--Republicans get to show themselves off as pop culture wannabes. Disgusting.
I don't think you and I were watching and hearing the same speech.
And also as old as the hills but it usually is told about milking a bull.
Call it a sneaking suspicion, but I don't think the First Lady has GWB's backbone (in the sense of ability to shrug off the liberals' hatred). I think she's trying to carve out a subtle distinct identity for herself, even at her husband's expense. It would not surprise me if we saw and heard more of this kind of thing from her, as a means of asserting herself as a "modern woman," and as a means of protecting herself from the left's hatred of George.
You are right. Laura crossed the line at least twice -- the examples you cite. It's a sad day when a Republican First Lady, who had been considered a shining example of decency, stoops to this garbage. I have lost some of my respect for her, and it won't come back easily.
I also wonder if there isn't some latent hostility toward GWB here. Even aside from the horrible lapses in taste, her overall routine seems a little too barbed.
I don't think she DID "cheapen her husband's office."
I DO, however, think that YOU are coarsening the FR dialogue with your rude and base comments about her. Your comments are far more offensive than ANYTHING Laura Bush said. They were disgusting, abundant, and freely repeated time and again on multiple threads by YOU.
I'm going to remember you for this. And remember what you have said about her. You may, someday, live in a glass house, and while I will not particularly enjoy my revenge on Mrs. Bush's behalf, I will take it, if offered.
LOL! Sure beats 8 years ago when reich wing media whores were calling the first lady worse names than that on national television, during prime time.
With all due respect, Sir, you are a moron.
Have a nice day.
