John Sheehan of the Adirondack Council said there is overwhelming historical precedent to prevent any type of building that detracts from the region's scenic vistas and landscapes.
Barton Mines Co. wants to put 10 wind turbines near the north slope of Gore Mountain that would produce 27 megawatts of power.
'Its impact on the state's energy production would be negligible,' Sheehan said. 'But its impact on the Adirondack Park's future would be disastrous. That's the bottom line for us.
'Putting these towers up will not prevent the construction of a single coal-fired power plant, nor will it force a coal plant to close.'

Lots of wind up there on Gore Mountain...stored in a lock box.
OK, then the power company needs to announce that because of objections, the wind turbines will not be built. Instead, a new nuclear power plant will be constructed to meet the need, thanks to the environmentalists' objections.
Then watch them either contort themselves into little logical pretzels to object against it, or kill themselves.

LOL!
27 megs ? Ten kids on ten-speed bikes produce that much...
Maybe his raisin eating wife...
The same fight is going on here in VT. The landowners stand to make some bucks. The envirowhackos claim the "view".
Gore mountin'?
There is a problem. A wind farm in WV is currently the focus of a study which has found large numbers of bats being killed by the wind turbines.
So much wasted hot air.
"There is a problem. A wind farm in WV is currently the focus of a study which has found large numbers of bats being killed by the wind turbines."
The first question would be are they endangered bats? Second I would ask if the numbers killed are having a real impact on the bat population. I would also ask if there is a way to drive the bats away from the turbines.
Ok, so don't use wind turbines. There has to be another way to harvest electricity from all that hot air on Gore Mountain.
While there is a place for wind and hydro power on a small scale on a community by community basis, there is only one alternative (not oil / coal based) energy source that is practical on a national scale, nuclear. Others are being developed but nothing is ready to implement on a grand scale.

Truth, we need to build clean burn coal plants and nuclear plants to address our energy needs. The alternative stuff and conserving are not effective for a growing economy.
27MW / 10 turbines = 2.7MW turbine? Never heard of such a machine, most land-based turbines are between 1.0 ~ 2.1MW each.
From what I've read just the fact they've found bat carcasses is a problem because the carcasses don't last long. The remains of a deer lying dead beside a roadside will be there for weeks and longer. The body of a bird disintegrates rapidly in comparision. Apparently they don't check the kill zone frequently enough to be able to say how many are being killed other than it's a larger number than they previously thought possible.
My guess is that they thought bats with their echo location would be able to avoid the blades. That's not true. The study was originally looking for dead birds when they found the bats. I have no idea if any are endangered.

I know that they run into things because in my 40 years Ive personally seen bats run into telephone poles a sign posts several times. (Bats interest me so I watch them and see these things)
