Italians Seek to Close Website Showing Pope as Nazi
ROME (Reuters) - Rome judicial authorities sought a temporary injunction Friday against an Internet site which carried doctored photographs of Pope Benedict dressed in a Nazi uniform.
The crude photomontages of the head of former German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger on the body of a man wearing a swastika armband and standing in front of a Nazi flag were posted 10 days ago on the Italian branch of the international news and opinion site, Independent Media Center (www.indymedia.org).
Rome investigating magistrate Salavtore Vitello said in a statement the pictures violated a national law prohibiting defamation of the Catholic Church. Vitello said he was also considering taking action against the owners of the site for insulting the authority and honor of the Pope himself.
Ratzinger served in the Hitler Youth, a Nazi paramilitary organization, in World War II when membership was compulsory for young Germans.
He was soon released to study for the priesthood and his biographers have said he was never a member of the Nazi Party and his family opposed Hitler's regime.
Jewish leaders and human rights groups have welcomed his election as Pope and his anti-Nazi roots.
Judicial sources in Rome said the Indymedia site was registered in Brazil and it was not immediately clear how the injunction, if granted, would be put into effect.
The Italian arm of the Independent Media Center, whose site is a forum for hundreds of contributors around the world on issues ranging from anti-globalization to gay rights, could not be reached for comment.
Catholic ping!
Indymedia:
Anti-American, anti-religion, anti-civilization.
The Antichrist lefties just keep exposing themselves, don't they?
That assessment of IndyMedia is like calling Hitler an "ordinary German".
This is the difference between the mainstream press and indymedia. We all know how slanted the MSM is, how they conveniently ignore certain questions, facilitate push polls, ignore certain stories, play to death others, etc. you know the spiel. That is why rathergate was such a blatant black eye. It went one step further at the highest level and disallowed a simple excuse. It was a fabrication dressed as high-journalism.
That being said, the times are a'changin' and each story can now be often cross-referenced, fact-checked etc. Yet the MSM still has to be very careful about out-right lies. When they lie they have to often utilize a clintonian plausible denial technique.
Indymedia is an example of fantasy journalism and I am dead set against this attempt to ban these socialist/commie "journalists" especially when they decide to wear no clothes. I want their anger, deceit, dishonesty on display. Then when the koolaid crowd tauts a "fact" they saw on an indymedia release they can be quickly belittled.
"Tolerant" they're not.
I don't think they will be successful in getting this website turned off. In any case, it's good Reuters is getting the word out about these people.
OMG! That pic is as bad as when Ken was taken hostage!

????????
Links to Indymedia are not wanted here.
Thanks.
Oh, I understand. Am I allowed to post the clip from the press release w/o the link?
Ugly stuff, but not all that surprising given their bent.
Anti-religious garbage from a looney Liberal site.
I knew there was a reason I liked Italians!
They're so desperate that they'll even use a terribly made picture to try to defame him.
