SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A female U.S. reservist soldier who posed before naked Iraqi detainees as they were abused at Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison will plead guilty to seven of nine charges against her, her lawyer said on Friday.
Lynndie England, 22, became the face of the Iraq prisoner abuse scandal after photos of her posing before humiliated Iraqi prisoners were published last year. One showed her holding a naked Iraqi detainee on a leash.
She will agree on Monday at Fort Hood, Texas to a plea deal that could bring a maximum sentence of 11 years, her lawyer Capt. Jonathan Crisp told Reuters. He called her a pawn in the affair.
"Justice is being done based on the evidence that has been brought forward at this point," he said by telephone from Fort Hood where he met with prosecutors on Friday.
"The government has certainly been more amenable as of late than they were initially. I think they recognize her ultimate role in this is not what it was initially thought to be. She was a pawn."
England was facing a total of 16 and a half years in prison. After the scheduled plea on Monday, a military court will decide her punishment following the testimony of several witnesses. Crisp said he hoped it would be lower than the 11-year maximum.
"Monday she's going plead to two specifications of conspiracy, four specifications of cruelty and maltreatment and one specification of indecent acts," he said. "They are dismissing two of the charges."
If this is the sort of thing that really grabs 'em, maybe they're not worth directing too much PR effort at.
Are you crazy? Lt. Calley was sentenced to life but was paroled after serving three years under house arrest. Do you think she will serve more time than him? 11 years being light. Give me a break.
No, this was an inflated propaganda BS propagated by the liberal media to undermine the war on terror and as a consequence to undermine the Bush administration during an election year. It always amaze me that so many can't see what's is clearly in front of their noses.
Based on her reported involvement, and the sentences already handed down to the others involved, I'd say somewhere 5-8 years sounds proportionate.
Your point was better understood during the Nuremberg trials, though. Apparently, that lessons learned then have been forgotten.
All I really know is this kapinski, couldn't hod a candle to BG Evelyn Foote.
Lynndie England is not a scapegoat. She, and the rest of those people (they were NOT "Soldiers"!), have to pay for their wrongdoings.
The evil actions of terrorists (NOT "insurgents") in Iraq must be, and is being, dealt with. They are literally evil, and will be held accountable to Man and to God.
Linking (read: justifying) England & Company's disgraceful conduct to anyhting else is a red herring - they are mutually exclusive.
England, et al, brought shame and dishonor to MY uniform. They were out-of-control bullies who, if found guilty, must be punished to restore complete honor to all Soldiers.
11 years? That's a lot of time for panties on the head.
That it was inflated propaganda does not contradict my larger point that this event had wide ranging repercussions on our image and therefore impaired diplomacy while we are at war.
Only last week world-wide-communism ambassador Ted Kennedy was rubbing it our faces again. It all started with out-of-control parties that the participants clearly knew would be UCMJ violations. That's what was clearly in front of their noses.
I didn't say the soldiers acted properly at Abu Ghraib, but she doesn't deserve 11 years in jail.
Article 81Conspiracy
Maximum punishment. Any person subject to the code who is found guilty of conspiracy shall be subject to the maximum punishment authorized for the offense which is the object of the conspiracy (my comment ---- see article 90 and 134)
Article 93Cruelty and maltreatment
Maximum punishment Dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and confinement for 1 year. (She got 4 specifications of this charge)
Article 90 --- Assaulting or willfully disobeying a superior officer (recall that this was a charge related to her relationship with Specialist Charles Graner (who by the way got ten years)
Penalties:(2) Willfully disobeying a lawful order of superior commissioned officer. Dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and confinement for 5 years.
(3) In time of war. Death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct.
Article 134(Assaultindecent)
Maximum punishment. Dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and confinement for 5 years.
A fat drunken slob who's worthless opinions are amplified world wide in the hate-america campaign.
That's right, and we can't let that influence the facts. Hateful criticism of America isn't new.
"Their stupidity no doubt cost additional American lives (through the backlash that ensued) and they went a long, long way to undo all the goodwill those of us that went through the war worked so hard and sacrificed do much to build"
The main thing that helped the lefts progaganda was the fact that we knew WMD's were getting shipped out of Iraq two days before the invasion(Tommy Franks) and yet we didn't act. So now the MSM can rant all day that they didn't find any WMD's.
If we would have stopped them or done something different perhaps we wouldn't be facing the backlash today. It might have changed the Operation of the war but I wan't to know who said not to stop them crossing. Who gave the order? Why didn't someone act?
However, the main thing that really pisses me off is the fact that those pictures of England and the others were part of a Military Investigation and were leaked(?) Correct? Has anyone tracked who did that? I want those people in prison more than England and her merry band. Those people are just as responsible for the backlash as well. The problem was being solved with due process before those pictures were on TV.
I dunno, Ron Jeremy (AKA the Hedgehog) gives her a run for the money.
