Imagine not having withholding and having to watch your bank account drain by writing a check to the government -- if everyone had to do that, tax reform would come quickly!

I think you are right because it is deducted at source you never miss what you have never had but time has come on both sides of the pond for people to demand a fair shake and ensure that the money they pay to government is being used in their best interest.

I pay into a private pension as well as our state one but even so if I take that sum out of the equation my deductions per month are nearly a quarter of what I earn.
