Gunnulf Oterkiil tried to revive a young woman who fainted and lost consciousness after striking her head on the pavement. Later he received a NOK 6,000 (USD 955) fine.
Oterkiil refuses to accept the fine that resulted from a chaotic Saturday night in Porsgrunn last September, newspaper Telemarksavisa reports.
"He is not fined for trying to help, but because he knocked down a man who was interfering," prosecutor and police lawyer Kjell Ove Ljosåk said in Skien and Porsgrunn municipal court on Wednesday, where the matter went after Oterkiil refused to pay.
"Together with a completely sober friend I was standing on the sidewalk at Dickens after closing time at 3:30 a.m. I was far from intoxicated after two-three half-liters (pints) of beer. A stranger, a young woman, came and grabbed me. We spoke a few seconds when she suddenly fell backwards and hit her head on the pavement with a frightening crack," Oterkiil told the court.
Oterkiil bent down and folded his jacket under her head and put her into a stable lateral position. Another man called an ambulance while Oterkiil checked her pulse and breathing.
While this was going on a man suddenly appeared, lay down beside the unconscious woman and kissed her on the mouth. "I tried to push this clearly drunk man off and asked him to stay away while another man and I tried to get control over the situation," Oterkiil said.
But the amorous drunk refused to give up, and after four or five repetitions of pushing and conversation Oterkiil had had enough, and "hit him in the face, possibly with a fist".
The prosecution argued that Oterkiil should have gotten someone to help him remove the troublesome man, and the court will now decide whether the fine is justified.
Among other news from Norway, our gallant allies in the war against terror, it appears the famous paintings by the Norwegian artist Edvard Grieg, "the Scream" and "the Madonna," were destroyed (incinerated) by the thieves, and exist no longer.
Also, the major Norwegian petroleum company it appears purchased a very large portion of the major Mexican petroleum company.
I was very surprised. Population statistics show that Norway has much empty land and few people--but it seemed to me everywhere below Narvik in Norway, Norway is pretty crowded.
Next time that happens Gunnulf Oterkiil should be advised to toss the drunk into the nearest fjord first.
$75,000.000 hunh?!
I think he's going to learn to paint things that look EXACTLY LIKE "The Scream".
Hmmm. Well, if true (that the paintings were NOT burned), that is good news--I must have been reading the "newspaper reports" the police expressed skepticism about.
Let your insomnia enlighten me...please post your Norway pictures--thanks
I plan to do that the next two days, madam, as we head into the weekend (and nothing tends to happen in Norway during the weekends); I purloined some great scenic photographs of a whole lot of amateurs (i.e., these are not professional photographs purposely made to "beautify" things; these are unaltered photographs of fjords, reindeer, mountains, plateaus, forests, whatnot--but alas no bison.
Some great photographs, although "scenery" is not my "thing;" I prefer "people."
No good deed goes unpunished?
But then, that doesn't mean the paintings have in fact been burnt, just that some criminal is putting out word of this for whatever reason.
Then again, it makes sense for the robbers to destroy them since they must by now have realized that they can't be sold and that extortion isn't going to work. It would make even more sense in the long term to return them, hoping that the police would then lose interest; but doing so might be felt too risky in the short term, I suppose.
Any pictures of my new found motherland would be great! I look forward to seeing them--people and all.

Some fjord in Norway:
Same some fjord in Norway, under cloud cover:
I hope these will be sufficient, until this weekend.
This new member of the Norway ping list straightened out her family tree, and happily discovered she is of Norwegian descent, not Swedish, which had been thought before.
Wow.
That is remarkably similar to Scottsbluff, here in Nebraska (the extreme west of the state, near Wyoming)--the similarities between Norway, the Nebraska of Europe, and Nebraska, the Norway of America, never cease to amaze.
As your photograph was unfolding, I was thinking you were playing a prank on me, giving us Scottsbluff.
Heh... Had I been aware of Scottsbluff, I'd have tried! ;-)
I'm sure that Scottsbluff--visible for miles and miles on the prairies, and a landmark for those headed to California during the 1850s--while pretty large, is quite a bit smaller than your Scottsbluff, though.
It's been a few million years since Nebraska had a seashore capable of carving out such things, and one assumes Scottsbluff has crumbled over the eons.
By the way, the state of Nebraska sits atop the largest and deepest underground "ocean" of fresh water in the world.
Your knowledge of geography is astounding! Do you live in Nebraska?
<<born and raised in the Sandhills of Nebraska, the Norway of America.
(Comparisons between Norway and Nebraska, oftentimes made on the Norway ping list, EXCLUDE terrain, but include all other features, such as population characteristics, social outlook, general culture, personal attitude, and yes, both places even have bison.)
<<but have lived all over; usually come back to the prairies and bison for three or four years, and then start getting itchy feet again, and take off for a couple of years.
<<feet are slowly beginning to itch.
