Terrorism has been with us since the beginning of recorded history, both as a form of intimidation and as asymmetric warfare.
Nonetheless, few people listened to the comprehensive analysis offered by Yossef Bodansky, whose 1999 book, "Bin Laden: The Man Who Declared War on America," sold modestly before the 9/11 attacks. After it was too late, another 400,000 copies went into print. It was only then that U.S. government officials took the time to fully understand the complexities associated with the threat of Islamic terrorism. The same is true for the U.S. media.
In the aftermath of 9/11, families of the victims overcame opposition from President George W. Bush to form the 9/11 Commission. Despite its 567-page report, the commission failed to address explicitly the issue of root causes. Neither the 9/11 commission nor most others have understood the part Balkan terrorism played in what happened.
As a nuclear safety engineer, I have systematically studied the events leading up to 9/11 and determined that Balkan terrorism was, without question, a stepping stone to the events of that terrible day.
The 12-year war against the old Soviet Union by the Afghans (1980-92), financed in large part by the United States, gave birth to Afghan Arabs, Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida and the Taliban. The Islamists, intoxicated by their victory over the Soviet Union, began to believe that they could defeat the other superpower, the United States. Bin Laden provided the leadership and the finances. New initiatives were launched in Central Asia, the Caucasus and the Balkans.
The dismemberment of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s provided an opportunity for the re-Islamization of the Balkans. Iran-led Islamists moved in rapidly to join the tripartite civil war. The jihad against the Christian Serbs and Croats, with the principal financial backing of Saudi Arabia, was waged with participation from terrorist organizations such as al-Qaida. The Islamists did not come to Bosnia only to fight the "Serbian aggressor," but for the creation of the first European Islamic state, as well as for the control of territory and infrastructure.
The Bosnian jihad was not only condoned but assisted by the United States. While bin Laden was not even on the White House radar screen, he established the hub of operations extending into Western Europe and North America.
The Bosnian-based terrorist network provided the essential capability for the 9/11 terrorists. Al-Qaida leadership played key roles, including bin Laden, who obtained a Bosnian passport. Al-Qaida's second in command, Ayman Al-Zawahiri, ran the operation. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, mastermind behind 9/11, fought in Bosnia together with 9/11 hijackers Khalid al-Midhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi. Mohammed Atta, the lead hijacker, spent some time in Bosnia as well. While the Islamist terror network was maturing in Bosnia, al-Qaida was looking for other opportunities in the Balkans. Al-Zawahiri appointed his brother Muhammad to establish a terrorist and intelligence infrastructure for infiltration into Kosovo and Macedonia.
Western political and media analysts still do not understand the linkage between the wars in Bosnia and in Kosovo and the broader terrorist wars.
"The big powers do not want people to ask too many questions about any links between the Balkans and the so-called 'war on terror' following 9/11," writes British journalist Eve-Ann Prentice. "But the links are there . . . wars there in the past 10 years are inextricably interwoven with what is happening today in America, Afghanistan, Iraq and across the world. . . . Political and military leaders in Washington should not have been surprised when the monster they helped to create turned against them."
STRATFOR, a leading security consulting agency, recently cited German and Israeli intelligence claiming that Kosovo and Bosnia have become advanced training centers for so-called white al-Qaida members (Albanians, Bosnian Muslims or Chechen recruits). They do not look like Arabs and are indistinguishable from other Europeans.
Although the intelligence community is fully aware of the threat, political leaders are denying it and the media are silent. Given this cover-up, it's fair to ask whether we are able to prevent yet another major terrorist act.

Apologists for the wars fought under Milosevic try to exploit conservative dislike for Clinton and the current American war on terror by associating Serbia's enemies with Clinton or with our al Qaeda enemy. You are confusing Albanians with Kosovars. They do NOT like each other and have virtually no connection. Albanian's living in albania do not wish to interact at all with Kosovar Albanians.
Concerning Bosnia: You are wrong. Madrid's train bombers trained in Bosnia under al qaeda operatives. They have recieved legal bosnian passports and exploit that to enter europe.
No one "justifies" Milosevic's overreaction in the Balkans. And yes, a lot of conservatives do attack Clinton's Balkan intervention because who he is. But you are treating both military actions as a will of humanity instead of political oppurtunity by Clinton.
Why did he not go to Africa where one million plus were dying in wars since you are so quick to defend US miltary action under Clinton. Reason is, the Balkans conflict was easier to win. Furthermore, why should the US solve a conflict on the EU's backdoor when Kosovo has NO US interest whatsoever? Is it not better to use our resources in the Middle east, Southeast asia and china?

Sorry, but it's not revisionism. At the time I was on an Orthodox Christian listserve. One of the posters knew personally one of the victims in the first attack in the wars of the Yugoslav dissolution: the machine gunning of an Orthodox wedding in Bosnia by Muslims. It was incidents like that, together with Izetbegovic's political position (and the Croatians adopting the same flag that the Ustashe had flown when exterminating the Serbs at Jasanovac--the third largest fascist death camp during WW II) that led the Serbs in the seceeded republics to try to fight to stay in Yugoslavia. (Note, by contrast Slovenia's and Macedonia's secession was not opposed with any force.)
Izetbegovic's Islamist writings are not something made up after the fact, nor is the funding of the KLA by Al Qaeda. The wars might have been fought anyway, but the U.S. shouldn't have gotten involved, and especially not on the side of Islamists. Fighting secessionists is often ugly (Sherman's march through Georgia would doubtless class as an 'atrocity') even without massacres perpetrated by one side on their own people---the Sarajevo market, according to Japanese investigators (hardly someone with a dog in the fight)---or faked to make military casulties look like murdered civilians as at Racak.
The EU's enthusiasm for giving Muslims their own state in Europe can only be seen as appeasement, in which Clinton was only too happy to join.

Kifah Wael Jayyousi, arrested Sunday at an airport in Detroit, Michigan, was chief facilities director for public schools in Washington from 1999 to 2001. But in the years running up to that high-profile position, he supported "violent jihad" in Bosnia, Kosovo, Chechnya and Somalia, according to a criminal complaint unsealed Monday.
Long before the crap hit the fan in Kosovo I worked with a woman from Albania here in Chicago. It was 1994 and I had just gotten back from Kosovo. She was very adament about me not equating Kosovo Albanians with Albanians from Albanian. She went on and on about her disdain for Kosovo Albanians (I won't repeat what she said here because much of it was over-generalized and borderline racist). It was at that time that I realised that there were vast differences between Kosovo Albanians and those from the homeland. I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised. The differences between Croatian Serbs, Bosnian Serbs, Kosovo Serbs and Belgrade Serbs is often as different as Kentucky Americans, California Americans and New York Americans.
You'd never know it by reading the official line by America's corporate media, State Department reports, or Free Republics resident Serbophobes though.

According to the Fourth Superseding Indictment, Jayyousi, Hassoun, and Youseff conspired to fund and support overseas violent jihad conflicts involving acts of murder and kidnaping in several foreign locations. Those locations include Bosnia, Chechnya, Kosovo, and Somalia.
My parents village in albania didnt even allow Kosovar refugees to set up camps there let alone support them in a sepratist war. Sure the Serb Paramilitary committed crimes but little is said about the KLA radicalizing the conflict to draw in international support. Where are the news about the KLA killing albanians and driving them from homes or their drug running operations?
Make no mistake, i do not condone what Serbia did. There were other ways to handle it, but i will NEVER support Kosovo independence at the hands of a violent seperatist movement that started it.

Thats a gross distortion of the truth. The Pakistani ISI gave birth to the taliban. UBL and al qaeda were formed when he realized US support for the MAK was behind the afghan invasion. Furthermore, there is NO such thing as "afghan arabs". Those are imported fighters by islamic radicals during the time of the conflict.
I do agree however, that the US intelligence services should have realized the danger posed by radical islam and should have tried to neutralize it early on by assassinations or whatever means necessary.
Sanel Sjekirica, one of the Islamic terrorists sought by Spanish authorities, was a student at the University of Oviedo in Asturias, northern Spain. He completed a course in architecture and computer technology, and he last attended his course on 20 November. The 23-year-old is wanted along with Amer El Aziz and Rabei Osman Ahmed in connection with the 11 March massacre. According to sources from the Ministry of the Interior, Sjekirica was also being watched by security services before the Madrid bombings. Aziz has been linked to the 11 September attacks in the United States and was accused of involvement by Judge Baltazar Garzon. Meanwhile, authorities in Bosnia are working with Spanish police to see if Sjekirica is of Bosnian origin. According to AFP news agency, the head of the Interpol in Bosnia, Brane Pecanac, said they were treating this as an urgent case and hoped to have results soon. It also emerged that the ’mastermind’ behind the 11 March attacks Serhane Ben Abdeljamid Fakhet, alias the Tunisian, had his studies paid for by the Spanish authorities for the past four years as part of an international educational programme.
Bosnian Suspect Held in Madrid Bombings
A Bosnian man wanted for questioning in the Madrid bombings voluntarily returned to Spain from what he called a vacation in Sweden and was arrested, the Interior Ministry said Saturday. Sanel Sjekirica, 23, was arrested Friday night after he arrived at Madrid's Barajas airport on a flight from Stockholm. Sjekirica, who studies computer science in the northern Spanish city of Oviedo, told The Associated Press earlier this week in Sweden that he learned through media reports that he was a suspect. He denied any role in the attack that killed 191 people, but said he once shared an apartment with Serhane Ben Abdelmajid Fakhet, the Tunisian real estate agent that Spanish authorities have identified as the ringleader of the plot.
