Gilbert, Minn. (AP) Whorehouse Days took another hit at the Gilbert City Council meeting last night.

The council voted against renting city buildings for the event -- a celebratory look back at a time during Prohibition when the town was known for its bars, gambling and prostitutes.

Mayor Bob Garrity Jr. said a group's request to use the community center and arena for the July festivities was too vague.

The council requested representation from the group planning the event at the meeting. But no one showed up.

Ahh c'mon! A little Dionysian diversion is a good thing, once a year or so... !

You know, I loved "Whorehouse Days" as a kid.

The cotton candy-flavored underwear on a stick, obscene balloon animals, hot-dog eating contests, and the "Tunnel of Love"still make me misty-eyed.

I hope the Gilbert City Council reconsiders!

Yep, that's what I would want my town known for, "Whorehouse Days". Maybe soon they'll get "Porn Theater Week" or "Topless Bar" Month. Or "Come To Gilbert And Help Us Celebrate Drunk Driver Weekend!"

One of my late father's first cousins was at least partly responsible [as sheriff] for closing the whorehouses and the bars that operated outside of the law on 25th street in Ogden until / after World War II. He was an imposing character, and a good story teller until the end, but the area went into a decline that has lasted until the present. Maybe Ogden could use its own version of "Whorehouse Days."

It’s a pity more retired law enforcement officers don’t write their memoirs. I can’t imagine the stories they must tell and could tell.

The truth of their daily lives would make normal fiction look boring.
