A Columbia College student took this photo of reputed mob boss Joseph "the Clown" Lombardo-- without knowing who he was--for a school project just over a year ago.
The dapper old man on the bicycle looked pretty classy, so Columbia College student Val Carpenter pulled over and asked if she could take his photograph for her class project.
"He said sure, he struck a pose--he actually posed," Carpenter, 42, said Tuesday, shortly after she realized the photo she took along Grand Avenue about a year ago was apparently reputed Chicago mob boss Joey "the Clown" Lombardo.
The feds wish they could be so lucky and simply run into Lombardo on the street. Lombardo, 76, was indicted Monday on federal racketeering conspiracy charges and is the subject of an international manhunt.
Lombardo and Frank Schweihs, 75, a reputed mob hit man from Florida, were the only two of 14 men indicted in "Operation Family Secrets" whom federal agents were still searching for, FBI spokesman Ross Rice said Tuesday.
An FBI organized-corruption squad in Chicago that led the investigation into unsolved mob killings was knocking on doors of Lombardo's relatives and associates Tuesday, Ross said.
Carpenter, who attends Columbia part time, said she was working on a final project photographing people on bicycles when she ran across Lombardo. She said she took the shot and he asked her if she wanted to take more.
In a hurry, Carpenter declined and pedaled away on her own bike. At the time, she said, she did not know who the man was. She never asked his name but often waved at him. "He would say, `Hi.' He's just a friendly guy on the street on a bike," Carpenter said. "That's the thing cyclists do."

Probably a gift from Kerry for help with the union vote.
Yeah, I guess Kerry gave "The Clown" his $12,000 mountain bike, now that he no longer needs it for photo-ops.
Oops, WLS just had a story saying this isn't Lombardo, but just some old man who rides his bike around the neighborhood.
One who's used to running numbers...that sees the gas bills.
I'm actually ok, possibly delighted, with that. It's more efficient to just set cash on fire rather than give it to government.
If you read through the whole article (linked in the header), his own lawyer fingered him in the picture taken by this woman - says it's Joey the Clown!
Interesting....... hadn't thought about that.
Tourist guy - LOL!
Yeah, I agree with that too :-).
Read through the article this morning. Channel 7 is reporting that the Trib will have to retract the story tomorrow. Link now not working. Truthfully, I can't see the clown who is notoriously camera shy posing for pictures. I don't blame the Trib considering his lawyer fingered him, but it is not him.
(to continue)...being a gangster was better than being President of the United States.
Isn`t that the greatest mob movie ever made or what? When it comes to mob movies everyone always talks about "The Godfather" but they always completely ignore the Masterpiece "Goodfellas". The greatest movie Martin Scorsese ever made, 1st only to "Taxi driver" and "Raging Bull". Believe it or not I read the book before I saw the movie and the movie was verbatim from the book, word for word. If you don`t believe me, buy the book and read it. It starts off with those exact words in the movie. That is why it succeeded on the scale it did. Mr. Scorsese did not alter a word from the book. He did not let egos destroy it which is what happened to "Gangs of New York". Gangs of New york was another Masterpiece of a book, but that fat f***ing slime bag f**k Weinstein insisted on turning it into a faggot Titanic with that girl DiCaprio in the lead. That was a crime to beat all crimes because that book was beyond Goodfellas. If people thought the mob was sick in the 20th century, they should read the book "Gangs of New York" to see the real definition of sick. The guys in that book made Tommy DeVito look like Mr. Rogers and I know Mr. Scorsese wanted to make it like that, but Weinstein the bitch wanted it turned into a Disney "Leonardo Faggio" movie. God, I almost puked when I saw that flick. I can understand these guys want to make money on a film, but they never seem to realize that a well made one can do just as well as one that focuses on a flaming homo.
As I write this, he and mob enforcer Frank "The German" Schweihs are still on the lam.
To Kenny Bunkport:
What kind of mob boss gets around on a bike?
All kinds of mob bosses
cruise around on bikes.
these days.
John "the traitor" Kerry
The feds knew where he lived, it's a crappy apartment in Chicago, they just needed the goods.
This man's name is Stanley. He used to be a janitor but has been on disability for 15 years. Now he does odd jobs and good deeds in his neighborhood.
"Something should be done, yes, to straighten it out," Stanley said.
He has the same kind of hat that gangster Joe Lombardo sometimes wears and rides a bicycle like "The Clown". But Stanley is torn between laughter and tears over this Tribune mistake because he's not an outfit boss.
"If he's a big time criminal, I'm Mahatma Gandhi," said one of Stanely's [sic] friends.
Gotta find the pic of Kerry wearing that jacket with the dumb daisy pull on it......
What kind of mob boss wanders the streets in a bathrobe?
Evidently seeming mild, innocuous, and perhaps quirky to the general public had its advantages for organized crime kingpins.
