NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -After two bellyflops, Congress is considering a dollar coin again. This time it might actually work. Like lemmings rushing into the fjords, Congress cannot seem to resist a leap into the dollar-coin money pit. Despite two wildly unsuccessful attempts to introduce a dollar coin, legislators are trying again. This time, however, lemmings might fly. On Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed a bill to create a new $1 coin, which would accompany the current Sacagawea piece. The measure enjoyed enormous bipartisan support, passing by a vote of 422 to 6.

He's dead weight. Close enough.
Once they stop making the dollar coin look like a quarter, it might actually succeed.
Maybe they know something about his health that they aren't telling us???
OK, I read the entire article and it has NOTHING to do with Clinton. Honoring all of the men who have served as President necessarily includes WJC, but it is not because f him or in spite of him that they are considering this.
I'm no fan of Clinton, nor am I an apologist, but bringing him into everything that people think is silly is, well, silly. It's not as though there is a discussion of only using him, nor is there discussion about replacing any existing face with his cherry red mug.
It will. Didn't you read the article? The coins will have portraits of all US presidents. In order.
I think I'm going to stock up on Sacajawea's and start spending those exclusively, to seek out such morons.
Absolutely correct!!! In Canada, I can tell when I have more or less than $10 in my pockets: Over $10, my pants start slipping. So, I buy a couple of things (like cheeseburgers) and my pants stay up. What a way to goose an economy!
Canada and Europe both have one and two dollar (and euro) coins. Works OK. I would like to see them lose the pennies... utterly useless.
You don't have to be dead. Neil Armstrong is on the back of the Ohio quarter, though I don't know why. He was probably the first astronaut to walk in Ohio or something.
Exactly. The only thing is that both he and Bush, will presumably be alive when their coins are made.
Why not just make more of the 2 existing dollar coins. You get them at the post office stamp machines as change for a larger bill. Why spend more money on dies and design, etc...?
dollar coin actually makes sense
they are cheaper to make and maintain since they can stay in circulation much longer
they do need to come up with one that is actually a good symbol of the US to have any weight though, having an Indian woman or Susan B Anthony is not the way to promote longevity
now if they made one with Reagan i would be supremely happy
And to re-tool machines to accept these. I remember the Susan B. and the only machines where I lived at the time that would take them were the turnstiles for the Miami Metromover. And mostly people just collected them. Maybe they can make them the size of silver dollars.
422 to 6. The Democrats want to thank him for everything he's done for their party. And so do the Republicans.
Hey! We don't want to read the article! It makes the posting too serious.
We should show the world we have a sense of humor and have a dollar coin with Moe, Larry & Curley on it. I bet it would be real popular then.
Did you notice Canada copied us with Provincial designs on their quarters? Those cute Canadians always trying to be as cool as we Americans ;)
The only place I see these coins used is at the post office.
They use them for change at the self-service postal machines.
Put in a ten dollar bill for a book of stamps and you'll get two dollar coins and change back.
We never use them, just put them in our change bin, and when we "cash in" our change, we give the coins back.
ROFLMAO
"Not positive on this but doesn't the person on the coin have to be - well - dead?"
The idea here is to make coins of all US presidents (4 per year) in order of their service. from the article:
"When the time comes to honor contemporary presidents, such as George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and their successors, their likenesses are to be minted whether they are living or dead.
That means by 2018 or so -- when Bush and Clinton would be in their early 70s -- the United States could break a long-standing tradition that money only honors the deceased."
