I've been waiting for someone to post this and so far no go. Therefore, I have taken matters into my own hands. It's only a headline so far, but this seems like a strange policy. It looks as though the Senate GOP has a contingency plan for Bolton in case the Foreign Relations Committee balks. Any parliamentarians out there know any more details on such a move?

It seems that the GOP is confident in Bolton's eventual confirmation. The credibility of his detractors is crumbling (see http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/?entry=15623_Bolton_Accuser_Admits_Plagiarism_at_Daily_Kos#comments). Senator Frist has been speaking with aplomb of late, so I hope he's finally got a handle on the RINO problem. I'm cautiously optimistic on this matter.

The Dems are faltering - their "compromise" talk is an effort to confuse the GOP to by themselves time to regroup. The GOP leadership must not fall for this - the time to strike is now. Whatever they were doing is working - do not blow it.

If the nomination is to be voted on by the full Senate, does it really make a sh-t what the committee does? What do these Comms. accomplish besides getting more face-time on C-Span?

I couldn't tell you. I thought a nomination had to be approved by the FR Committee before it could go to the floor. This headline makes it seem like the Committee is just so much fluff. I honestly don't know, but I would agree with you that if the Committee is just "window dressing" (to quote the most illustrious member of said committee), then it's just a waste of time, effort, and money.

I HAVE EMAILED LOTS OF CONGRESSMEN AND GOP AND TOLD THEM NO MORE MONEY NO MORE VOTES IF THEY DO NOT STAND UP FOR TOM DELAY, BOLTON AND JUDGES. WE NEED TO KEEP EMAILS GOING. EMAIL THOSE NOT IN YOUR STATE AND TELL THEM WE WILL DO TO THEM WHAT THE SWIFT BOAT VETS DID TO KERRY AND WE SUPPORT THEM WITH OUR MONEY AND THE INTERNET. ALONG WITH ALL THE PEOPLE WE KNOW IN THERE STATE. IF THEY DON'T WE NEED TO STOP GOP MONEY AND VOTES. SO JUST BECAUSE WE CAN NOT VOTE FOR THEM DOES NOT MEAN WE CAN NOT HELP SEND THEM HOME. I TOLD THEM TO ASK TOM DASCHLE AND TOME FOLEY. IT MAY TAKE US WHILE BUT WE CAN SEND THEM ALL HOME FOR GOOD. I TOLD THE GOP NO MORE MONEY AND NO MORE VOTES TILL THEY STAND UP AND DO IT NOW. SO KEEP YOUR EMAILS GOING AND ALL US NEED TO BACK UP OUR WORDS NO MORE MONEY.

What the Mad Cow Melody Townsel said,

Hello, Daily Kos-ers:

Tonight, my deepest fears regarding my pending testimony in the John Bolton nomination process have come true: Republicans have dredged up un unfortunate chapter of my life and, clearly, are about to announce it to the world. When you read this, you may decide either that I was stupid to step forward, or that I no longer deserve your trust. I want, however, to be the one to announce this to you all since you’ve been so unbelievably supportive. When I was in college, 22 years ago, I plagiarized some columns while working for my college newspaper, and I was removed from staff. Months later, while working for another college newspaper, I wrote a review for a local play that tracked closely in format to another writer’s review — and, although it was not plagiarized, it made my editors, who had become aware of my recent past, very uncomfortable, and we mutually agreed that I would no longer submit stories to them. As you can imagine, I’m deeply ashamed to be forced to revisit these events so publicly — and, while I was under tremendous academic, financial and family pressure at the time, there is absolutely NO excuse for what I did so long ago. I knew it was wrong then, and I remain deeply ashamed and embarrassed. I wish to stress that Amy, my friend who has been such a staunch supporter and has been keeping you posted on things happening with my pending testimony, was completely unaware of these events. There are some things you don’t tell even your best friend.

What she really meant (from a LGFer);

Fellow Rampaging Kossacks, Tonight, I have learned one of life's everlasting truths: people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Do you know if all this has been confirmed? By that I mean was it really Melody who posted this at Kos? I suspect that it is, but you never know--it could be a trap to lure in Bolton's supporters on the web and destroy their credibility via a false story. Wow, I'm paranoid.

Senate Republicans need to stop "considering" and start "doing." On this and many other issues the time for mindless slobbering is over. Get it done.

Yeah, I agree with you on the "too-much-time-contemplating" thing, but this whole policy is weird. The committee is set to meet on May 12, and this headline (still nothing new on Drudge) makes it seem as though this "forcing the vote on the floor" is a contingency plan. I and others are a little confused on the whole matter.

I think the big showdown will be with the judges, and I am encouraged by the goings-on in that sphere. In my estimation, Frist doesn't get enough credit for the efforts he is making, and it looks as though things will pay off shortly. The Dems have been reduced to offering compromises that no one wants. We'll see how it plays out, but Bolton's nomination seems to be inextricably related to the judiciary issue.

I think that the Bolton confirmation will open the flood gates on everything, especially the judicial appointments. Should Bolton get ramrodded through, in spite of the squeals and howls of rage from the Democrats, the Republicans will discover while soaping up in the shower two orbs sheathed in a fuzzy sack at the lower end of their torso. With this will come an epiphany that they are indeed men and nothing will stop them now.

I hope that you are right. Unfortunately, words such as these in an e-mail response from Senator Frist to me are not very encouraging:

I have already taken several steps to address this attack on our Constitution and judicial system. On June 5, 2003, I proposed a narrow change to Senate rules that would prohibit long term filibustering of judicial nominees. On November 12 - 14, 2003, I held the Senate in session for almost forty straight hours — the longest continuous debate in over 10 years — to force the minority to defend their actions.

For what he calls an "attack on our Constitution and judicial system," the Majority Leader boasts of having "proposed a narrow change" and holding "the longest continuous debate in over ten years." One might logically expect that the Constitution deserves a less timid defense.

I hope you're right. I have been appalled by the apparent lack of spine in the Republican Senate. Between Bolton and the judges, if the Pubbies blow this, they can go suck eggs. I told a fund-seeker as much earlier today.
