Lack of fuel or not, you do not fly VFR at night in a single engine plane over Lake Michigan at midnight.

Wasn't it a similar mistake that did JFK Jr. in? Whatever the mistake, a hard-nosed critique will save more lives than will tears and condolences.

JKF jr was a new IFR pilot, in a plane that he was unfamiliar with that was overpowered for his skills.

He was also flying with a foot that just came out of a cast and he didn't have rudder control.

He was angry because his sister in law was a couple hours late, forcing him to fly at night in the fog.

He was disoriented in the fog during a pitch black night and I believe, now don't quote me on this, but I believe that he overbanked or somehow became inverted and completely lost his bearings and was too low to correct his problem, therefore causing him to plunge into the ocean.

If he would have waited until daylight, he would have still been flying over water, but he had two engines and he would have been able to see land, sky, and water.

It was tragic, 3 people are dead, but there is no reason not to report facts.
