"Air Force Lt. Gen Norton Schwartz, director of the Joint Staff, called the failure of the Iran hostage rescue mission a seminal event in recent American military history."
It was probably the last nail in Carter's political coffin, and probably helped Reagan gain the White House. Can't believe it's been 25 years; my memories of this period are vivid and directly responsible for my conservatism.

I remember yelling obscenities at Jimmah in my car, listening to the first reports of the disaster that was happening! God, those friggin' liberals!!!
Thank God for the Reagans and the Bushes of this world!

America today honored eight American servicemen who died trying to rescue American hostages in Iran 25 years ago.A ceremony here, on the 25th anniversary of their deaths, brought together the families of those killed, their comrades and those servicemembers who carry on the special operations mission.

Wasn't Carter accused at the time of not allowing the crews to train properly for the mission? Also, didn't Carter get cold feet after the mission started because of the bad weather and the loss of the first chopper? It was the confusing orders coming directly from Carter that caused a diversion from the planned operation and thus the collision? Someone refresh my memory.

I don't recall anything about training, but I remember he took direct control of the operation contrary to normal procedure. He also cut the size of the force well below recommended levels. It was poetic justice that it may have lost him reelection.

Yeah, that article seems pretty complete. My most vivid memory of the event is a iranian "cleric" holding up the charred foot of an American.
