Actually they could be married. Some Spanish cultures (Cuban for instance) are matrilineal. My wife was married to a Cuban, but her daughters (OUR daughters now) have her last name.

there's a good chance the couple that was attacked are indeed married. Their names are Hispanic, and in some Hispanic cultures it is common for a husband and wife to keep different last names.

This comment just really struck me as odd. First of all, he was holding the baby in his arms, which is why he didn't go in swinging.. I see nothing to indicate it has anything to do with his 'commitment.' Secondly, while we're making assumptions - okay, maybe they are not married. But even if that is true, he's there, isn't he? That's more than can be said for a lot of unmarried couples whose men (or women) hit the road as soon as the pregnancy test shows positive. Or shortly thereafter.

It seems weird to even be speculating on all this - is this really the first thing that popped into your mind while reading this story? Just curious.
