Sunni Muslim politicians dropped their demand Monday to include former members of Saddam Hussein's party in Iraq's new Cabinet in a bid to get more ministries. Iraq's Sunni minority is believed to be the backbone of the insurgency and many here blame the months-long impasse in forming a new government for a resurgence in violence.
As leaders of Iraq's main Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish factors continued their backroom wheeling and dealing, Prime Minister-designate Ibrahim al-Jaafari again put off his long-promised Cabinet announcement.
The National Dialogue Council, a coalition of 10 different Sunni factions, initially requested 16 Cabinet seats. It submitted a list of candidates Sunday that includes former members of Saddam's Baath party, said Jawad al-Maliki, a senior member of al-Jaafari's United Iraqi Alliance. But when that was rejected, they dropped the demand, he told reporters.

Haider Ajina sends his translation of an article that appeared today in the Iraqi newspaper Nahrain, titled "Iraqi Sunni Accord confirms that Sunnis will participate in the next elections":
Adnan Mohamed Selman, president of the Iraqi Sunni Accord, confirmed that Iraqi Arab Sunnis will participate in the next elections. This was backed up by Nasier Alaani, a leader in the Iraqi Islamic Party [a Sunni party] who said that it is of utmost importance that all Iraqis of all factions participate in the writing of the constitution. Haider adds his comments:
Those Sunni leaders who called for the boycott of the Iraqi elections have realized the error of their ways and the damage they did to themselves, their followers and Iraq as a whole. These same leaders are now joining the river of democracy, which quenches the Iraqi peoples' thirst for freedom and security. They realize that terrorism and supporting terrorism is not the way. The terrorists have lost. They're nothing but psychopaths and criminals now, and everyone knows it, with the possible exception of a few deluded Western leftists.
Have they also dropped their demand for a pony, too? :-P
"They thought they had us surrounded,Now we can fire in any direction."
At least they continue to work at figuring out who best to place in positions based on the current scenario playing out.
I am sure Condi does not have to remind them that they must come up with a constitution on August 15th. I am encouraged they continue to hack and whack to come up with a body of main players. Isn't what we do in this country? Aheemmm, hee hee, no sly remarks. Seriously. There moving forward in a positive way. The whole process could have been aborted at this point and a real civil war (as the L/MSM pray for all day long) could have broken out. But that isn't happening. They continue to work at forming an interim government that will be responsible for forming their very first constitution as a nation free from tyranany in high places. Let's give em a chance folks. Hell, the POTUS can't even get his man John Bolton in to champion a more honest flexible and responsible UN body. How can we expect the Iraqi's in all their forms to just make magic work in a few months. That's my 2 cents on the issue.
The MSM left Afghanistan,no bad news.
The U.S. Military stays, the MSM will leave Iraq soon.
"The U.S. Military stays, the MSM will leave Iraq soon."
Sadly, probably most of the Iraqi goverment types would hope American media continued reporting. But reporting more fairly. The last thing they would want is for the American public to forget they exists. They truly need world wide support, which they are not getting much of. Interestingly as you mentioned, most of the L/MSM appeared to leave Afganistan as the elections approached. And they do not seem to be any the worst off for it. I think the L/MSM went into shock when things start going better in Iraq and they actually held those country wide elections. You could see it on their faces as they reported news, for weeks. They appeared drawn, tired, listless to some degree. No one was making sharp critical remarks in passing. The tone of their questions to embedded reporters changed. The POTUS through em a sharp curve ball and it will take them time to regain their total formal arrogance.
No, there is a new media,talk radio,the blogesphere,Free Republic,we are it.
The old media is dead.
But not for all Americans. We have to remember there are literally millions of middle age, and older folks who only watch the L/MSM nightly news, and read lib newspapers But the point I wanted to make is that I am sure the Iraqi government would like to hear some success stories about what they have been doing shown in the USA. How little attention their country wide election received.
