"I asked to be raised of my functions and that my resignation is accepted", the Lebanese officer in an official statement indicates.

The powerful General, considered as a right-hand man of the Syrian direction, had informed Friday Lebanese the Prime Minister, Najib Miqati, which it placed "at his disposal of the beginning to the end of work of the board of inquiry of UNO", on the assassination of Mr. Hariri on February 14.

Lebanon's pro-Syrian security chief quits as last forces leave

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanon's powerful pro-Syrian security chief submitted his resignation on Monday, hours before the last Syrian military and intelligence forces were due to leave the country.

"Security chiefs are usually appointed with politics and change when it changes," Jamil al-Sayyed, head of the General Security, said in his resignation letter.

Sayyed said last week he was ready to step aside during a U.N.-ordered international investigation into the February 14 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri. The anti-Syrian opposition had demanded the resignation of the country's security chiefs after Hariri's death.

He is not supposed to resign. He is supposed to be relieved of his command and transferred to a disciplinary board. He is not supposed to present this resignation, if ever he is entitled to an honorable discharge, to the prime minister, but to his own hierarchy, the minister of interior.
