Who would possibly think that after having become the modern pariah, with the walls of regulation closing in, and with constant increases in taxes and demonization by the neurotic masses of non-smokers that smokers might be a bit more likely to feel depressed than the average schmuck?
It is illegal in many jurisdictions to fire someone who is gay, no one beefs about their increased medical costs, but we nicotine niggers catch hell for health costs and can be fired for smoking a legal product in our off time?
So now the gambit is to paint us as deranged sociopaths and criminals? (Correlation is not causation.) Just Lovely.
Has anyone considered that if the money pissed away on "research" demonizing smokers had been spent on basic cancer research, there is a good chance the disease would be eradicated--to the benefit of non-smokers as well?
I woke up one morning about 6 months ago and decided to never smoke again - after 18 years of smoking. No patches, no gum, just quit. If you need those crutches to quit - or training wheels for breathing - then you're not going to quit successfully. It's all in your head. Self discipline is all it takes.
Now I'm getting to where I can't stand the smell of them. It's suffocating. Oddly enough, I've lost weight with no smoking.

Hey Joe - there is/was a cure for cancer. The AMA destroyed it back in the 1920s/1930s since it would put them out of work.
Do some research on a Dr. Royal Rife. Just a quick Google will supply you with lots of info. His cure applies to so many diseases that you won't believe it could be true.
Yeah, me too.
Hundreds of times...
Then just do it. What really made my decision was money. Approaching $5.50/$6.00 per pack out here in WA, with a one pack a day habit, frees up a couple of hundred a month to do something else with. My wife was supposed to quit as well, which would've made the savings over $400/month. Close to 5 grand a year.
I can think of lots of ways to spend 5 grand a year.
The gal who works for us tries not to take smoke breaks while on the job but she remarked the other day that the tv ad reminded her she hadn't smoke all shift.
I said what ad they don't have Cig. ads anymore.
She replied not those ads the ones telling you not to smoke ads. LOL
For starters, does this figure show that smokers are more likely to be depressed or does it show that depressed people are more likely to smoke?
If people with problems want to smoke, too, that is one thing, to say smoking causes the problems is a bass ackwards sort of logic. Some day, I suppose there will be a 're-education camp' in my future, if this keeps up.
Now, that is depressing. (8^D)
If a Democrat had been president during the 1980s (shudder the thought) and a Republican during the 1990s, this story would have blamed the Republicans for the slowing trend. I guaran-danm-tee it.

Why does this all have the "Just say no--Take your meds!" stink about it?
Is the objective to make chemical zombies out of those who will not quit smoking because someone else thinks we should?
You're right. I don't believe it.
Just makes me want to burn one!
Major
We are are stubborn lot, just like the NRA! Cigarettes are legal and we enjoy smoking.
Smokers are more depressed and suffer a higher rate of anxiety disorders and other psychological maladies. At the same time, nicotine may provide a mental boost that helps them cope. These finding help explain why some people won't quit, experts say.
This is a load of dog do-do! They will say anything to the general non-smoking public to keep us on the hit list! What is wrong with enjoying a legal product? Would alcohol and prescription drugs be the better answer? I think not!
I won't quit because it's legal and I enjoy it. Can you take guns out of the hands of the NRA members? What is the difference. They enjoy their guns and I enjoy my cigarettes.
Recent studies show smokers are 4.7 times more likely than the population at large to suffer from major depression.
How about depression coming after 9-11? I am sure a lot more people are depressed now that America was hit then ever before. And it doesn't matter if a person smokes or not!
These authors must lay awake all night thinking about what they can diss the smoker's with in their next article!

You're pretty smart. And you make a lot of sense.
Afraid to order off of the Internet?
Then start rolling your own!!!
I roll out a beautiful carton for a little under $8 dollars. Premiums in my state are now up to $45-$50 a carton. Can you imagine the money I have saved over the past 4 years since I now roll my own? It's mind boggling.

What makes you such an expert? If patches or gum or whatever helps someone who wants to kick the habit to do so, what's wrong with that? For some people these "crutches" give them the confidence they need that they won't succumb to a sudden nicotine craving while they're breaking themselves of the habit.
