I have never understood why we should care if people go on hunger strikes. If people want to kill themselves this way who cares.

I hear ya. Back in around 1990 there were muchos Mexicanos on the UCLA campus protesting the fact that the university didn't have a "Latino Studies" department, and they were willing to starve themselves to death over it. Led by a radical professor, the hunger strike lasted for almost a month. I went over there to check it out, and saw the prof and a few of his disciples emaciated and in wheelchairs.

Predictably, the university finally caved and a new department was born. But for some reason they had to get rid of an existing dept to make room, so Astronomy got the axe (although the major was later integrated within the Physics dept).

I just couldn't understand why these nutjobs were willing to kill themselves over something so ....unnecessary.
