Oh great. You know bin Laden lurks here! Now he's got a new target!
Interesting story, but they left out the little-known part where Van Alen belts Chrysler then demands Severance pay.
That's a tribute to the Chrysler Building?
The Chrysler is the jewel in the crown of Art Deco architecture.
Walter P. Chrysler's original hand made railroad apprentice tools and toolbox are still on display in the lobby unless the world has come to an end.
If that's the NYT's tribute to the aniversity of the Walter P and the Chrystler Building then the NYT is populated by enfants who are ignorant of American history or openly hostile to it.
Walter P is one of the greats of 19th century American industrialists, even greater than Ford.
Most beautiful skyscraper on earth. I still marvel at it every day walking to and from Grand Central. Even better at night, especially a foggy night.
Chrysler Building still #1, though. Enjoy.
Manhattan 'Island' -1933
and here
A great structure; in the extensive Chrylser biography done a couple of years, the whole story of the building and its structural design is given. It is well worth the read if you can find a copy. Also, I am almost certain the tools are now at the Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills, Mich.; they were there the last time I was up. Many of them were actually designed and made by Chrysler himself for his railroad work.
After his railroad work, Chrysler made his fortune working with Billy Durant at Buick, then helped turn around a couple of ailing auto builders before consolidating the pieces for the new Chrysler Corporation in 1924; Dodge came on board shortly after. He was the last of the era of pioneer automotive giants, and was well-known as a hands-on guy who could do just about any job his men at the plant could.
little graphic! It would be so much easier to avoid the NYT altogether if they never ran stuff like that.
Happy Birthday, Tall Beautiful Lady.
Still the most beautiful skyscraper ever constructed.
The most remarkable photo of the Chrysler Building to me has always been the photo of Margaret Bourke-White, the famous photographer, out on one of the gargoyles!

I've stayed at both of the "W" hotels on 39th with beautiful views of the Chrylsler building and many fond memories.
