Florida law still allows corporal punishment but leaves the decision to school districts. Many districts abandoned the practice years ago because of liability concerns Fine. Get the parents to sign a release. If they won't sign one, they can come pick up their out-of-control brats themselves.

Until now I had thought the schools had a locus parentis function. (spelling of the term?) While all this "going by the book" loving as "discipline" is going on, what about the other children who have legitimate expectations of the teacher teaching THEM such mundane subjects a reading, writing, and arithmetic/math?

The parents should be parents and heat her bottom up.
If the school can't handle the child expel her until the parents get a clue.

Swatts on the butt seem to do the best to stop this type behavior. I raised 2 boys on my own for 10 years and didn't have them act up like this. Of course they knew mom would take a hand or belt to their butts if they got to far out of line. Then there were the evenings of NO TV to endure for lesser offenses.

Spare the rod and issue the handcuffs.

The Love and Logic style encourages children to talk about their feelings, make their own decisions and complete required tasks within loose "time frames." This is just stupid.

I was a public school teacher for four years once in my misguided mid twenties. I taught middle school in Hillsborough County, Florida in Tampa, not far from this school. My teaching career was so abbreviated due wholly in part to situations like this.
I had about 2 dozen problem kids in middle school. Disruptive, disrespectful, thug mentality. Called one of their moms one day after school after a particulary harrowing week with her son and she told me: "When he's at home, he's my problem. When he's at school, he's yours."
I turned in my resignation 15 minutes after hanging up the phone.

Only a mental defective would handcuff a five year old. That one is REAL simple.

What parent hasn't tried this trick on stubborn children: Tell them it's time to go, pretend you're leaving and hope they follow. Here's one who never did. Never, ever, ever would I want her to think I would just abandon her somewhere.

There are really no bad children just bad parents. This girl's mom should be brought up on child abuse charges. The bible has a lot to say about not guiding a child in the way she should go. This is tragic and unfortunately the psychiatrist brought up race on tv so now that's all people will talk about. The mom won't ever have to explain being a bad parent.

I saw this video last night. The child was completely out of control, screaming fighting, hitting the teacher, advancing on her as the teacher backed up. The teacher needed help. Someone strong needed to get a grip on this kid. Handcuffs sound like they went over board but the child had to be restrained in some fashion. A small straight jacket comes to mind. I'm glad she isn't my kid.

I saw the complete video.
This little
girl hellion was 100% out of control. She was ripping things of the walls, throwing stuff and hitting the teacher.
IMHO, she needs to meet....
Mr. Belt!
And it sounds like 'momma' needs to meet him too.

Saw this on the news last night. No, the kid shouldn't have been handcuffed, she needed a straight jacket, but I don't think the police carry those. This kid is doomed, she is totally out of control and her mother (don't know about dad) has called the police about her before--can any of you as parents imagine calling the police to control your five year old? This child is in terrible shape and one wonders if she will ever get the discipline and psychiatric assistance she needs. Not likely with a mom so stupid that she has let the child grow into a beastie at five. We'll read about this one in 10 or 15 years and it won't be pretty.

I don't see why they had to use cuffs, knowing how bad it would look. Why didn't they just hold her arms and carry her out to the car?
