5 Year olds should be home with their mother. When the state takes over raising children, conformity becomes the objective. This is the inevitable result.
5 has been the typcial age for kindgergarten, or in some rural schools, first grade, for several generations, at least. This was a kindergarten class, wasn't it?
I started kindergarten at 5, 51 years ago this fall. My cousin who is 3 weeks younger, started first grade the same year. She's now the executive secretary to the director of a large catholic hospital. I'm a senior reasearch engineer. Plus both my parents worked full time. I spent my pre-k years, as well as before school and summers through most of elementary school, with baby sitters. (But NOT in "day care") I've worn the uniform of my country, I've been married to the same woman for 34+ years and have never killed or robbed anyone.
