This much could be discerned, though: Douglas is under intense pressure from national Republicans to run for the Senate seat now held by Independent U.S. Sen. James Jeffords. And the governor is no fan of U.S. Rep. Bernie Sanders, who will be seeking the seat.

PING!
I like this possibility.
But many Freepers ought to realize that Douglas won't be a rock-solid conservative.
How many of you are OK with that?
Good! I hope the Republicans through Jeffords out on his.............
SunBernie Slanders is no prize (From the demo-facist state next door)
I'm OK with it. Jim Douglas is as conservative as Vermont is willing to elect at this time. Better half a conservative than a liberal or, worse yet, a proud socialist.
I don't object to RINOs in states where only RINOs can get elected. As long as they throw in the occasional crucial vote when the leadership calls for it, they can vote the other way all the rest of the time and satisfy their constituents.
Jeffords crossed the line and betrayed his party. That's quite another matter.
Even another Stafford would be an improvement over Jeffords. 40% Correct is better than 20% Correct.
What New Englander is?
Very well said. Politics is the art of the possible.
Okay Vermont FREEPers...is this guy a RINO or not? I must admit I doubt he's a Bush Republican..:)
Depends on how you difine RINO. He's about 50% to 55% conservative, if I'm not mistaken. That's probably the best we can hope for out of Vermont.
From now on, Bernie should be referred to in ads, media, etc. as Socialist Sanders.
It makes no sense to have Douglas run. If he runs and loses we may very well lose the Governors office and the Senate seat. Better to run Dubie or Tarrant.
Freepers should realize that winning this seat is important even if the person is a RINO. First, it gets us that much closer to being filibuster proof. Second, it keeps a radical like Sanders out of the Senate. Third, since Vermont almost never ousts an incumbent this will be a safe seat in a blue state.
Win, win, win.
I'm okay with it. He chaired Bush's VT state campaign...He's unlikely to pull a Jeffords.
To avoid having an actual, honest to God socialist in the Senate? (Yes, I know, a bunch of D's are essentially socialist anyway, but having it be official is NOT a good line for our country to cross)
Anybody who says they are 'conservative' and doesn't say yes is either 5 years old, or a liar when they call themselves that.
Douglas has a pretty good record in Vermont, especially considering the state he's from. I'd be wary of him, but as of now, I have no reason to think he would be a Jeffords like Republican, and plenty of reasons to think he would be good, not the least of which he chaired Bush's re-elect committee, while he was running for re-election, in a state that Bush lost 60-40. He's got some guts.
