Double trouble for Big Dig: Number of tunnel leaks rises to 1,400
Boston Herald ^ | April 22, 2005 | Casey Ross

Posted on 04/22/2005 7:32:11 AM PDT by ProudVet77

Despite intense repair efforts, the number of leaks discovered in Big Dig tunnels has exploded to 1,400 since last summer, nearly doubling the number of leaks contractors have been working to repair for months, officials confirmed yesterday.

``The number of leaks and their persistence demonstrates that we have a serious problem here,'' Attorney General Tom Reilly said last night. ``The leaks continue to occur, and the lack of a clear solution at this point is troubling.''

The struggle to stop chronic dripping leaks at roof joints in the Interstate 93 tunnel has left state and federal overseers worried that project managers will never develop a permanent fix, let alone meet a September completion date.

The tunnel leaks will hit the national stage today when a congressional committee questions top Big Dig officials about widespread construction errors.

Yesterday's disclosure was the first time project overseers have acknowledged the number of roof-joint leaks has expanded so dramatically. The Herald obtained the information from officials at the Federal Highway Administration after repeated requests to the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority went unanswered.

Some state officials said project officials must acknowledge efforts to inject grout into the leaks is not working.

``There is no permanent fix to these leaks, despite what the Turnpike Authority wants you to believe,'' state Sen. Steven Baddour (D-Methuen) said. ``The grouting will not work.''

And this loudmouthed politicians' expertise comes from where, I wonder?

Water should not be anywhere NEAR the areas where the roof is.

Read up on how to build a good foundation for a house - there are pages in any book on building detailing how very important it is to keep water far away from the walls, and details on how to use different kinds of drains , such as "french drains" to quickly move the water away so that it does not cause harm. What is the danger? Hydrostatic pressure, which is enormously strong.

It is not possible that the designers of the Big Dig would not have known about this; thus we are left to conclude that the design was proper, but the work performed was shoddy and incompetent.

"The number of leaks and their persistence demonstrates that we have a serious problem here . . ."

Sigh. My doctor told me the same thing.

``One way or other, I expect Bechtel to take full responsibility for leaks and water issues that have occured and continue to occur,'' he said. ``I believe it's their responsibility.''

This should be interesting.

Wonder what Bechtel's response to this will be?

Most of the "big-dig" is actually below sea level and is built in landfill. (2/3 or so of boaston is built on landfill) So the water is seeping in from the harbor. While the contractors are liable, the state screwed up too. It was known many years ago that the federal guys which had financial oversight of the project were playing games with the books (nmh - almost $15billion so far), those guys were sent packing.

What a surprise, the corrupt big dig and the corrupt politicians and the corrupt engineers and the corrupt contactor have built a corrupt tunnel.

They've already responded. They first said that their initial plan shouold have been used. Their second response was that their second plan is working fine and the leaks are no big deal and expected.

That's OK, we'll get our money back from Bechtel. (an evil big corporation) The state is proud that they have gotten something like $30 million back from them so far. It doesn't seem to occur to the state it wasn't such a good deal since they spend $60 million on lawyers fees to get back the $30 million. And no - Bechtel is no liable for that $60 million.

Reality TV needs cameras up and down the depth and length of that tunnel.

Union trade work ... especially the kind that win contracts by greasing the political skids ... usually is.
