 I read the 1st 3 Dune books years ago when they were still new. Years later I read them again and actually all 6 (or was it 7?) books by Herbert before he died. The series kept getting stranger with the Duncan Idaho clones. I would not consider reading the later sequels by his son.

Dune was OK but a bit odd. Asimov likely inspired him.
 
You might like to read Neverness sometime if you liked Dune.
 
Bruce Sterling is another writer who I enjoyed some time ago, but I have not read anything by him in years now.
 
I have no idea about these televison programs that are mentioned in this thread other than Star Trek.
