Wendy's Finger Finder Arrested

Friday, April 22, 2005

SAN FRANCISCO — The woman who claimed she found a well-manicured finger in her bowl of Wendy's (search) chili last month was arrested at her home Thursday night, police said.

Police in San Jose, Calif. — the site of the Wendy's in question — announced the arrest of Anna Ayala in Las Vegas (search). Police spokesman Enrique Garcia (search) said authorities would not give any details until a news conference Friday.

Ayala's 18-year-old son, Guadalupe Reyes (search), said he had gone to the store around 9 p.m. when he got a phone call from a friend who was back at the house.

"We rushed back and she was already gone," Reyes said.

Reyes said he had no other details and was waiting to hear from his mother.

The arrest is the latest twist in the bizarre case about how the 11/2-inch finger tip ended up in a bowl of fast-food chili.

The lesson for everyone in the industry is to settle quietly, pay them off and keep the publicity to a minimum.

Perhaps practical, but that's the attitude that increases and perpetuates this type of fraud...allowing all of us to pay more and support these lowlifes.

No, that would be the same as "negotiating with terrorists"...if the companies don't pursue the fraud, it will never end, it will only get worse.

I couldn't disagree more. This con artist's scam is a perfect example of what happens to all sorts of businesses and why insurance premiums are through the roof, some poor working stiff at Wendy's is not working today, and that wingut mother in the MJ case had to plead the 5th with regard to welfare and the J.C. Penney shakedown.

Also, people who tend to dismiss this sort of crime are very likely the same ones who have decried the "outsourcing" problem. What drives our economy is jobs and this explosion of blatant fraud hurts businesses that employ American workers. This is not a "victimless" crime, it simply may not have happened to you...yet.

Please see the Pepsi/Al Sharpton story to confirm.

I'm no lawyer, but this sounds to me like product tampering, and I think that was made a felony after the Tylenol scare all those years back. People who pull this stuff should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Then we'd have a lot less of this expletive-deleted.

You can't be series!!!

Oh, I am series. If Wendy's had just slipped this woman a few bucks within the first couple of days, all of this would have quietly gone away. Instead they stood on principle, and it would up costing them years worth of building in market share.

If I were running a chain of fast food franchises, there would be $1,000 in cash in an alarmed lockbox with one of those "IN CASE OF EMERGENCY BREAK GLASS" covers. Instruct the manager that when somebody comes up with something stupid like this, use the money in the box to buy the offending food item back, and then deny everything. It would be a heck of a lot cheaper than all the bad publicity.

Let us hope so. I am glad Wendy's did not pay her off. It is time that people and companies stood up to these scum and had them convicted and put in jail where they belong! Maybe that will put a stop to this.

What kind of person walks around with a severed finger waiting to drop it into a bowl of food?

No.. These people should be paraded all over the news for weeks and weeks, to make an example of them.

Punishment should be extremely harsh.. Minimum 20 Years In Prison, No Parole!

That is moronic.

You would have about a million people finding hairs and toe nails in there burgers who would score there $1000 jackpot for being a slimeball. How expensive do you think that would be for Wendy's?

Lay off the booze. Your argument is foolish.

If you were running a chain of fast food franchises, and your policy became common knowledge (which it would within 20 minutes of an employee asking "what's that for?"), each of your locations would have such "emergencies" several times a day.

As long as it's in the budget, though, everything should be fine.

Don't work that way. The finger story got fairly large exposure immediately. Her plan was to sue for big bucks which would've kept it in the news...just not to this degree perhaps.

Wendy's did what they had to do. In the long haul, most people will learn that this was a scam...rather than believing that body parts routinely turn up in Wendy's food offerings.
