R E L A T E D L I N K S Text & Audio of radio ad targeting Voinovich
Voinovich raises conservative ire over Bolton vote
Group to run ads attacking senator for delaying vote on Bush nominee
By Lisa A. Abraham Beacon Journal staff writer
Ohio Sen. George Voinovich is dealing with the firestorm created when he refused to vote to confirm the appointment of John Bolton as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
The conservative group Move America Forward dubbed the move ``obstructionist conduct'' and plans to launch a radio ad campaign against Voinovich today in Ohio.
Marcie Ridgway, a spokeswoman for Voinovich in Washington, D.C., said the senator had no response to the promised ad campaign.
The group is upset with Voinovich, who on Tuesday told members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that he wasn't comfortable voting on Bolton -- President Bush's pick for the job -- after concerns were raised about allegations of unbecoming conduct for a U.N. nominee.
The phones in the senator's Washington office rang constantly Wednesday and e-mail boxes were brimming with responses to his actions.
``Obviously, there's been a lot of interest in what the senator did yesterday, and we've been receiving a large number of calls and e-mails, quite frankly, from all over, not just Ohio,'' Ridgway said.
The responses, she said, have been both positive and negative.
The Ohio Republican Party in Columbus was dealing with similar reactions, but party spokesman Jason Mauk said the state party is standing by its man.
``Obviously, the senator is an independent thinker, and he is very deliberate when it comes to serious consideration such as this, as he and his staff have repeatedly made clear,'' Mauk said. ``This is not a no vote. This is simply the senator's effort to get up to speed and weigh the facts.''
Mauk said Voinovich is the most popular elected official in recent Ohio history, and he can take the heat and still have the overwhelming support of Ohio voters.
``He's not the kind of leader who cows to pressure from interest groups,'' he said.
The Move America Forward Web site says it is ``strongly backing the nomination of John Bolton to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations'' and expressed ``outrage today that a Republican United States Senator would refuse to vote to confirm the President's nominee in committee.''
``As a result, Ohio U.S. Senator George Voinovich will be the target of radio ads criticizing Senator Voinovich for his obstructionist conduct,'' the Web site says.
According to the site, the organization already has raised more than $24,000 to help pay for the ads. The group is encouraging calls and e-mails to the senator and provides his phone numbers.
Summit County Republican Party Chairman Alex Arshinkoff, a longtime supporter of Voinovich, said his office, too, was fielding calls from people who weren't happy about Voinovich's actions.
Arshinkoff, however, said he believes the senator hasn't made up his mind about Bolton.
``He said that he wanted time,'' said Arshinkoff, who believes that in the end, Voinovich will vote to confirm Bolton.
``Thinking people should support this president,'' he said.
Ridgway said Voinovich was not purposely trying to thwart President Bush's choice.
``He didn't really defy him. He's a very big supporter of the president. He was saying that as a committee, we need to look at these things a little bit further,'' she said. ``He wants to avoid, quite frankly, a bloodshed on the Senate floor.''

Ohio needs to dump this Rino.
It's hard enough fighting back the scummy dems and to have back stabbing RINOs sucks.
It's in the voters' hands.
The Ohio Republican Party in Columbus was dealing with similar reactions, but party spokesman Jason Mauk said the state party is standing by its man.
The writer of this article needs to become better informed. The vote was not to confirm him but simply to bring it to the floor for a vote.
Sounds like it's time to donate to

At least someone is standing up to Voinovich. Where are the Republican Senators?
How could Voinovich even consider not voting for Bolton on the grounds of how he treated a subordinate X number of years ago.
With a TRAITOR like John Kerry sitting across from him at the same table, this should never have even crossed his mind!! Is this another sell out to the left??
Standing by their mistake is more like it. That idiot was against the Bush tax cut too. Good to see that Barbara Boxcar is getting his support.
If Senator Voinovich does not see fit to respond to the email I sent to him on Tuesday, he will forever lose my vote.
The email was non threatening and included the question:
Why did you wait until so late in the process to express your concern?
"Voinovich raises conservative ire over Bolton vote"
NO!, you don't say...ain't that a shame...FIRE AWAY OHIO REPUBLICAN, the double crosser deserves every bit of IRE you can muster!!
That's very comforting. Meanwhile, "their man" is swapping spit with John F'n Kerry.
Stupid comment from his aides. there is only bloodshed on the senate floor if the RINOs don't vote with the Pres. he will contribute to bloodshed not stop it.
They had the majority you vote you win simple as that.
Unless one wants to get attention and cause undue trouble.
"The Ohio Republican Party in Columbus was dealing with similar reactions, but party spokesman Jason Mauk said the state party is standing by its man."
The Ohio Republican Party is in the control of a bunch of good old boy RINOs, who aggressively defend their turf.
They're tried to destroy Blackwell, because he's actually a conservative.
We need to get rid of Voinovich and DeWine, but the Republican Party of Ohio won't support any true conservatives, and the Democrats are so far left that they make Voinovich look good.
There are a few fund raising scandals floating around the party leadership, so there's hope of some honest conservatives regaining control of the party, but it still seems like slim hope.
Same is true in Maine, and likely true in other states. Politics is a thing of intertia and insider "games."
If he feels so strongly about this, why the heck didn't he show up for the earlier hearings?
The people of Ohio need to set a fire under his rear end and hold him to it! What a jerk! Every RINO needs to get unseated in their next primary contest by a REAL conservative who goes on to win their seat! Or let them change parties so they lose because people see their real colors!
ohio get it together. this back stabber needs to go,
i can't imagine any American that professes to be conservative doesn't think that we dont need a tough no holds barred representative to combat the evil U.N. regime.
he is a traitor to our great president. and should be lowered into a leper pit and shunned by all.
i am so mad at the LOSER rino's that are looking for their 15 min. of fame.
if you have delusions of grandure, seek profesional help and quit holding up the most important post to be filled.
"Summit County Republican Party Chairman Alex Arshinkoff, a longtime supporter of Voinovich, said his office, too, was fielding calls from people who weren't happy about Voinovich's actions."
This quote from the article is the best part. It shows that people hearing about it are taking action.
Move America Forward didn't suggest to anyone that they should call the Summitt County Republican Party. That means people are hearing about the ad and taking action on their own. That is great.
I hope Move America Forward can keep those ads coming in Ohio. www.MoveAmericaForward.com
"Obviously, the senator is an independent thinker, and he is very deliberate when it comes to serious consideration such as this, as he and his staff have repeatedly made clear,'' Mauk said"
Just lovely, 55 independent thinkers with no leader. This jerk-off is so deliberate about such a serious matter he couldn't even show up for the previous hearing.
Listen up RINO, I will gladly contribute to your opponent when your election comes up. That goes for the rest of you senate RINO's out there also.
