Maj. Gen. Peng Guangqian from the Academy of Military Sciences said that Taiwan is a "strategic issue bearing on the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation."
Peng accused Taiwanese officials and other forces of pressing for independence, which will "eventually lead to the disintegration of China."
He's right - an ideological threat.
But militarily no, although we [I type this in in Tainan, southern Taiwan] could and probably would take out Shanghai if things got nasty.
And economically, the two countries are as close as teeth and tongue.
Everything disintegrates sooner or later. Enjoyed the travelog yesterday.
There about as much a military threat to China as Luxembourg is to Germany.
Shanghai?
When they give you the Three Gorges Dam?
"When they give you the Three Gorges Dam?"
Dam is further away, and Shanghai is more of a psychological target. I don't really know, I just get the news out here...
Such an event would probably have far more to do with the oppression and corruption of the ruling Communist Party than with anything Taiwan would be capable of causing. On the other hand, if the mainland were to attack Taiwan and have their a**es handed to them (a'la Vietnam 1979) courtesy of the Taiwanese and the US Seventh Fleet that might be a spark which could bring their whole empire down.
China is about to crap to get Taiwan back under their thumb.
Taiwan is no military threat to China like the other Poster stated they are an ideological threat. Sooner or later some Chinese official will make the stupid mistake of trying to invade Taiwan and launch a war no one needs or wants.
Bad thing? The money we are sending China thru buying their goods will be paying for it.
Nothing new here---China has been saying this for years. It will be news when we see the missiles flying towards Taiwan and the invasion fleet launched.
