I always thought “pre school” was “day care.” That’s basically what we’re talking about, right?

Para Los Ninos.

They can say it in Spanish, or they can say it in English, it always translates into more money, more money, more money...

for the children

The Governor of Tennessee is currently stumping the state selling a similar program. They passed a lottery for college scholarshipe and it isn't working out so they are dragging the babies into the conflict.

Ostracize a teacher today....

Yep. More socialism. I mean no one asks the basic question of whether parents should pay for preskrool. Rob Reiner and the Left think the rich should pay for this wonderful new freebie. California is dead-broke and the Democrats have no problem coming up with yet another entitlement program! I expect it to pass since the Reiner initiative targets rich liberals and its "all for the chilrun." I'm just saddened at how my state is being ruined by the leftist wackos who run it.

Well, I'm only 17, and I've never attended a pre-school thing when I was 4, and I still rank in the upper 80's/lower 90's on my standardized tests. I dunno what that WHOLE year would do for a 4 year old who would rather eat sleep and play games.

According to a RAND Corp. study, the state would get $2.62 back for every dollar put into quality preschool for all 4-year-olds.

Years ago, when California was the Golden State, we got along fine without gov't. preschools. And we had the best schools in the country.

To paraphrase P. J. O'Rouke, if you think day care is expensive now, just wait till you see what it costs once it's free.

Fascinating, so why do they need to raise taxes then?

This is a pet peeve of mine. Our school district in California (San Jose Unified) is trying to start preschool for all of our kids.

Of course, the district just had to close my kids' National Blue Ribbon, high acheiving elementary school because
"they don't have the money".

There some other funding (some different source) available for preschool. However, I know once they start this they are going to be asking for more and more money.

I also think it is totally unnecessary.

The districts are having trouble enough with k-12. They need to concentrate on that.

Children who have been to preschool are more likely to be productive workers, avoid trouble with the law and contribute to the economy as adults, according to the study.

I'm all that and so much more! And somehow I managed it all without spending one day in pre-school. Could it be /gasp/ due to the way my parents raised me?

I think a better case could be made to reduce society violence ban movie watching in public places. The dangers of second-hand movie making mirth and debauchery are by now well known yet Big Hollywood continues to ignore the dangers of those billowing toxic story ideas. Better yet Meathead could advocate for higher taxes for movie watching in public and form a committee of his closest fRIends to spend the "skim" --- it's for the children....

i thought Head Start was supposed to do that... my oldest son, whom we adopted through the county was in Head Start until he came to live with us at the age of 5... he could not count to three, did not know any of his colors or shapes... he couldn't even speak in a way that anyone would understand him... i spoke with his "teachers" and asked, "how come he is so far behind? the kids in my family pretty much know all their alphabet, numbers, shapes and colors at 3?" and they said he didn't know those things because no one has taught him... and i said, well--what does he do here? and they said, "we mainly cover health and nutrition." i took that to mean that he gets breakfast and lunch there... and gets to play... and that was it... so much for Head Start!

btw--after six weeks with us he knew his alphabet, could count to ten, could identify eight shapes, twelve colors... and at the end of one year, he was reading at the second-grade level and had no speech delays... didn't need preschool for that... didn't even need the suggested speech therapy...
