The filibuster fight will be disastrous for the GOP
The Hill ^ | April 20, 2005 | Dick Morris

Posted on 04/19/2005 8:58:06 PM PDT by Coastal

In 1936, President Roosevelt had just won reelection by one of the largest margins in history. His Republican adversary, Kansas Gov. Alf Landon, carried only Maine and Vermont.

Riding this swell of popular approval, FDR challenged the conservative rulings of the Supreme Court, which had invalidated many of his prized New Deal measures. Knocking the “nine old men” of the court, he proposed to add six new judges to help with the workload — in reality, to pack the court.

Despite his top-heavy Democratic majority in both houses of Congress, the public backlash was so severe that Roosevelt couldn’t pass the court-packing bill. The unpopularity he triggered by trying so weakened him that he was unable to pass much of anything for the next four years.

A similar fate could await President Bush if the Christian right succeeds in embroiling him in a battle to change the filibuster rule for judicial nominations. The filibuster, once seen as the last refuge of racists seeking to thwart the progress of civil-rights legislation, has increasingly become part of our checks-and-balances system. Changing the rules in the Senate will be seen as the modern equivalent of the court-packing scheme of FDR.

Read the polls. Newsweek’s survey of 1,000 adults March 17-18 fairly worded a question to find out public opinion on this issue:

I don't need a Newsweek poll. I talk to people all the time and in this part of the country...it will be disasterous for the GOP If they DO NOT kill the Demo filibuster.

What a bunch of garbage.

Morris is entertaining, especially when he's beating up the Dems, but he has no clue how important this issue is to the Republican base, and just about every other Republican.

Nice try, Dick.

" ... but he [Morris] has no clue how important this issue is to the Republican base, and just about every other Republican." Don't count on it. Morris is known for his inaccurate predictions/advice where causing the Republicans to falter is useful to the democraps. Morris is a democrat in 'moderate's' clothing ... the man is an amoral shill.

Let's see if I have this right. When the Democrats were in power they changed any rule that would give them an edge over Republicans. But, when the Republicans are in power they have to abide by the rules that the Democrats put in place or be labeled extremists?

Does anyone else smell something wrong here?

I will stop voting in national elections and local elections for congress if the republicans piss away this opportunity. Why vote republican if the democrats are going to run the show anyway?

I will honestly turn my back once and forever.

Dick, your prejudice against Christians is showing yet again. And, btw, it isn't only Christians demanding this. Unfortunately for Dick since Christians DO care about the Judiciary he cannot see straight on this issue.

The GOP is becoming dangerously close to losing its Majority and it is not because they would dare to challenge the Judiciary, but because they are seen as caving to the Dems on every issue that matters to Republicans. And Judges top that list whether someone is a Christian or an unbeliever.

The Judiciary has assumed a form of kingship over the American people, and the American people have lost their patience on the matter. Those that do not fix this will be the ones to pay political consequence.

If the GOP wants a disaster, they'll keep coming up small when it comes to appointing judges. If there's not some serious movement on judges by election time 2006, I foresee an utter debacle in the mid-term election.

The spineless wusses in the Stupid Party™ better grow some nads... soon.

author spends too much time inside the beltway.

Perhaps someone should remind him that republicans used UNPAID volunteers (and democrats used the oxymoronic PAID volunteers).
