Senate Blocks Ag Worker Citizenship Plan
LA Times ^ | 4/19/05 | Mary Curtius

WASHINGTON — The Senate today blocked a measure that would have created a path to citizenship for an estimated 500,000 farmworkers and their families, dealing a setback to those who advocate legalization as the key to immigration reform.

The measure's supporters failed to secure the 60 votes needed to prevent a filibuster by opponents, ending the effort by Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) to attach the plan to an $80-billion emergency funding bill that mainly would pay for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Under the plan, any illegal farmworker who could demonstrate that he or she had worked in agriculture for at least 100 days in the 18-month period before Dec. 31, 2004 and meet certain other criteria would be eligible for temporary residency.

Once the worker obtained temporary residency, he or she would have to work another 360 days over at least the next three years and no more than six years to be eligible for permanent residency. The spouse and children of farmworkers who obtained permanent residency would also be eligible for permanent residency.

Opponents attacked the measure as a thinly disguised amnesty program that would only increase the flow of illegal immigration into this country, and said it was inappropriate to try to attach such a sweeping change to an emergency spending bill needed to supply troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A different but similar amendment also failed. It provided no path to citizenship. It was voted down by a super majority.

This is a victory for Americans! Now, we need to round up the illegals and deport them.

Okay, I'll allow myself to feel encouraged, but vigilant.

According to an Ed Goeas poll 80% of voting Americans are against that idea, so maybe you can celebrate your above fanatsy in the privacy of your bathroom and let the adults try to figure out a solution to this problem that has been festering for 40 years.

Sure, Larry. Idaho has what, about 25,000 illegals? We'll pay for them for you. Forget the fact that California has millions and other states have millions more. Sure. We'll all pitch in and help you pay for them.

This man has no more patriotism than Clinton; Hillary or Bill.

victories abound on the illegal alien front. When will the leadership in the White House realize they need to take a hard line on criminality?

Who said anything about losing? I wasn't for the Craig amendment.

It also must suck to be against 80% of the American electorate who don't condone mass deportations.

Lets see.......that means that one person must work for a total of 460 days within a 7 1/2 year period, and is therefore rewarded along with a spouse and children.....how on earth would one make a case that this many people could have existed on 460 days pay for 7 1/2 years? Gimme a break! By the time the reward occurs, there will be 7 anchor babies born and then the farce matters not........but we will have financed it that long with a long list of social benefits.....the unearned kind......to the tune of at least 6 figures a copy.

This is unbelieveable. If anything I'd have said this would have passed, and Bolton would have been passed. Instead Bolton is stuck in committe, and this amendment fails.

I'm happy it failed, understand, but it's as though the world is upside down today. We've had far more success in Bush's nominations than on the illegal front.
