The new pope's concerns are eternally relevant. From his introduction to Romano Guardini's The Lord (a Club selection that all of the sudden comes with an introduction by the Pope!):

Does the fact that this man chose "Benedict" as his name lend any creedence to the "Prophecy of the Popes" by Malchius? The second to the last pope is supposed to be from the benedictine order, according to what I've read about his prophecy. Am I off base on my guess? I'm not catholic, so I'm not sure about any of this. Just looking for some enlightenment.

I will always wonder if he took that name knowing that the prophecy was there...

thats what I was thinking. Did he take the name because he wanted it, or did he take it cause he knew that the believers in the prophecy think the second to last pope will be a benedictine.

Actually, without having it more clearly explained, I think it may be both to reflect St. Benedict, the orginial, and Pope Benedict XV, who also was pope at the start of a dark century...

I think it was brave of him to take that name...there are prophecies out there besides St. Malachy's referring to it.

there are more papal prophecies besides Malachays that refer to the benedictine part specifically? I've only ever heard of Malachy's.

Most of it are take offs, I do believe of Malachy's but some were written a good bit before today...check out the link, and you will be surprised about how much has been written.

How old is Benedict XVI? 78?

We'll know in a few years if he's the second to last pope.

I agree but it does seem like an amazing coincidence that he'd be this close on all of these names/descriptions. (or maybe the church realized they needed to try and keep the prophecy legit, so all the popes knew to take names that'd correspond.)
