On Fox there was a priest talking to Chris Wallace, and he said he used to bring university students on tours to the Vatican, and Cardinal Ratzinger would always meet with them. He always knew what their names are, and which universtiy, Princeton, Michigan State, whatever...he knew.

He also said that he would often give directions to tourists looking to see where the papal residence was, and none of the tourists ever knew he was so important in the Vatican.

Apparently he is a humble, kind man who is very smart. I think it is an excellent choice.

They are also describing him as the leading scholar in the Vatican as well. This is good. Very, very good.

I have read several of his books, and I agree with you. The dissidents label him a "conservative" simply because he is true to the beliefs of the Church and is unwilling to let them turn everything upside down.

But he's not conservative in some stodgy, reactionary sense. He has done some groundbreaking theological work in the field of ecclesiology, which is to say on the nature of the Church itself.

A good place to start is his early book on Christian brotherhood, which was well received by Protestants when it came out.
