Here's a non-Catholic question for everyone:
Since the last Pope was "John Paul," how come this guy didn't take "George Ringo?"

Sorry. Someone had to do it.
Diocese of Gaylord?
Thank you.
We used Baltimore Catechism No. 1 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades, then moved on to Baltimore 2, which did us for grades 4 through 8. I think both covered the same basic material in the same format, but Baltimore 2 was more detailed. (I still have my Baltimore 2, but not Baltimore 1.)

Thanks...in looking at the Catechism online, it looks pretty much the same as what we had.
Know what? I am absolutely delighted to *see* you today.
Posting back and forth with you has made this blessed and
historical day all the more meaningful.
Warms my heart to learn your coworkers are pleased too.
Yesterday (admittedly in anticpation and hope for Ratzinger) I busied myself reading some of his writings, and "moral clarity" is certainly apparent.
In spades. :)

Benedict XV beat out Mariano Rampolla del Tindaro, the candidate of the 1903 conclave who was blocked because of allegations of secret society membership.
Was Ratzinger sending a signal?
Dear Darkwolf,
Don't take my generalizations too strictly. There are plenty of devout older Catholics who are quite "conservative" (how I hate that term applied to the Church). There are plenty of heterodox, but devout younger Catholics.
But nonetheless, I think it applies as a generalization.
I don't see the principle outcome of the Second Vatican Council as outreach to other religions. Rather, I view the true mission of the late Council to have been to balance the order of things in the Church, vis a vis the papacy, the episcopacy, and the laity.
But it will be another 20 - 60 years before the full (positive) effects of the Council will play out.
I remember reading once about a 17th Century Bishop in the Netherlands whose mission it was to finally implement the effects of the Council of Trent in his new See. This was some 60 years after the close of the Council.
Thus, I don't view the Second Vatican Council as being "wrong" at all. I DO believe that the misinterpretations of the Council made by the "progressives" are wrong. And delusional.
However, the young priests I know, who are good, decent, orthodox, and have the potential for real holiness, all adhere to the Second Vatican Council, all have imbibed of the theology of John Paul the Great, and likely all will love our new beloved Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI.

A caller to Howie Carr just said, "Better a Panzer Pope than a Pansy Pope!"
Malachi Martin aside, that's likely true. The cardinals obviously wanted an administrator, rather than a pastor.
I was disappointed, as I listened to the radio, that he was so formal and did not venture outside official protocol in his greeting and blessing. JPII, upon his election, greeted the crowd in all the languages he spoke, and was warm and personable.
BXVI strikes me, personality-wise, as another Paul VI.
We will not see a Pope with the media savvy of JPII in our lifetimes, I'm afraid.
Dear sinkspur,
"It's the equivalent of George W. Bush nominating a 78 year old to the Supreme Court."
Perhaps.
It would be a blessing if he were to prove to be the Hammer of the heretics.

I understand the bishop of my diocese (Monterey, Calif) is due for manadatory retirement this summer. Will Benedict select his successor, or was this already anticipated by John Paul II? I would not be disappointed if a more orthodox bishop was put in place here, although I suspect there would be wailing and grinding of teeth in the Santa Cruz County end of the diocese.
That reminds me of the phrase "the excesses of Vatican II" which I heard recently. I think the new Pope will be working on those excesses, rolling some of that back.
And we miss you. I'll pray.
