WE HAVE A POPE!!!
Is that considered blasphemy?
Valid point. I suspect they could not get enough consensus on other candidates (obviously). And the thinking might be better to go with a solid orthodox candidate with a lot of experience and proximity to JP II. Also, the cardinals may be aware there is a very dire need to try to revive Europe on a Christian/Catholic basis.
Reviving Catholicism on the right - among the orthodox and conservatives - is a geopolitical move as well as a theological and moral one. He will face down the "culture of death" cabals. Watching how they react should prove fascinating. Cokie Roberts, McBrien, Stephanopoulboy,et al. on ABC provided a sneak preview. This should prove to be an interesting drama.
LOL back at ya. Sure you can say that. I think he's picture perfect.
That's almost 70% ...
Oh, onyx - I am hearing a story now on FNC about how kind and generous and humble Pope Benedict is. I'm so pleased.
And now I have to go out again but expect when I get home that the final confirmation vote will be taken on Bolton.
You don't know that in 1933 some of the first inmates of Dachau were Catholic priests, Catholic labor union leaders, and Center (Catholic) Party politicians. They were joined by socialists and communists. The aim was to decapitate the democratic oppostion, those who had led the German govcernment during the Weimar period.
Just wait for the Gentle Ben analogies/humor.
I predict cartoons will now use bears as priests. (if they allow children to see priests)
Actually he reminds me of a few way cool WW II veterans.
One thing to realize is that Ratzinger has worn his spiritual and theological heart on his sleeve for decades -- he is an incredibly open person. He has done three, count 'em, three book-length interviews with journalists where he responded openly to every possible question about his outlook and beliefs. He's written his memoirs. And that sermon the other day was another example of the same -- no campaign oratory, but a cry from the heart.
The cardinals had to know exactly what they were getting.
Besides, the last time they picked an old guy to just sit quietly on things for a few years they got John XXIII. Surely that would make anyone skeptical of a "caretaker" option.
If you don't like it here, then be gone.
"Alot more people than the Catholic Church failed the Jews during the Holocaust."
...yeah, like... the better part of humanity alive at that time. Collective ignorance. (But we should never forget that there were those who were true heroes as well).
Would you or could you be celibate?
"When you fly over most European countries, all the buildings and streets down below are placed randomly, until you get over Germany. There, all the buildings and streets are perfectly lined up and everything is in exact order."
That's 'cuase they were all built in 1946-50.
Good choice in Rome today.
Ratzinger is an outspoken friend of American christians and even said, that Europe can learn from the American example. Ratziger was silent on the Iraq issue because he didn't want to argue JP2's position against the war. Insiders believe that Ratzinger understood and approved the reason for this war. Ratzinger is a true conservative. Another nail in the coffin to the liberalist agenda.

Well said, but here I can now sit and tell everyone else they shouldn't do what I did? I'm not even convinced all of it was sinful. Well, maybe the fun part . . .!
Ridiculous all of a sudden they become concerned with Christianity.
Oh, amdgmary. I just now saw your post and picture to me...and now I'm bawling like a baby.
