U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde, the Illinois Republican who steered the impeachment proceedings against President Clinton and championed government restrictions on abortion funding, announced Monday that he will retire when his term ends in 2006.

Hyde, who serves as chairman of the House International Relations Committee, made the announcement on his Web site on his 81st birthday. He was first elected to the House in 1974 from his Bensenville district near O’Hare International Airport.

Hyde also serves on the House Judiciary Committee, which he chaired from 1995 to 2001.

On his Web site, Hyde named among his accomplishments protecting the lives of the unborn

A blow to the pro-life folks in the party. He's been such a champion....a real statesman too, the likes of which are too few today.

HHH always fought the good fight like a gentleman. I'll never forget the impassioned speech on the rule of law he gave right before he was stabbed in the back by Traitor Lott.

Ping!

The RATS on the local news are bragging about picking up the IL-06. They claim that Crane's ouster in the Il-08 last year will follow into the Il-06. I expect Barack Obama to campaign for the RAT nominee. I hope Joe Birkett, Du Page State Attorney runs for the Il-06 seat.

I can't blame anyone who is 81 from deciding to quit wearing a necktie every day.

Thanks, Harry, for all you've done.

His challenger last year made quite a showing....

Has Birkett ever expressed any interest in going to the House?

No surprise here, it's been expected for a while. Chances are, he'll be replaced by another pro-life Republican.

Hyde was tarnished when his "youthful indescretion" was exposed during the Clinton impeachment. However, I have always admired his strong, pro-life stand. He has been in the arena fighting for the life of the unborn for 30+ years that I can remember. Bless Him.

I met Hyde back in 2000. Really nice guy, and has always been a champion for the GOP. Sad to see him go, but he's earned his retirement.

Henry is the one whose death was called for on national TV by "actor" Alec Baldwin.

He's had to deal with a lot of crap from a lot of people in his career. Not least of which from Mr. Baldwin....
