Maitreya has long been bandied about as a possible antichrist or false prophet by some discernment ministries and/or conspiracy theorists. He definitely has a following within the new age movement that sees him as the Messiah.
I don't remember how I found out about it. I don't exactly "follow it". But don't bother speculating. We're not meant to speculateon things that are meant to be revealed only on their own time.
