In what is described as the largest telematics deal in history, IBM engineers will design an automobile-monitoring system and install a device in cars to track drivers in the United Arab Emirates.

"Well, since I have some experience with IBM contracts"
Do ye now - Kindly quote chapter and verse of your experiences - to support your venom.
History has shown you don't know what you are talking about.
And nothing is 100% - but IBM has always made good where there is a problem - or they would not be where they are today.

When did this start, i.e. how old a car do you need to be sure you don't have it?
This stuff isn't really new - just more modern. Years ago, PA had a system on their turnpike where they used the time stamp where you got on, and the time stamp where you got off to determine if you had been speeding. You could get a mailed ticket.
There's one little problem. In most of the county where I live, cellphones don't work. Even law enforcement has problems with radio reception. Weather radio doesn't work either.
"--> Consider the source: United Emigrates
I don't think they have very much rights/privacy to begin with."
This is a proof of concept for what they want to do here.
My guess is that GPS and satellite comm work just fine there.
We will all be tracked, if they choose to do so, and we allow them.
What I really want to know, is HOW to DISABLE the damn Orwell box!
Not really an issue for me most of the time, I rarely drive any car newer than 1970.
But I might have to drive a rental some time, or some other unexpected circumstance could put me in a new car, at least temporarily.
Laugh if you want but it's only a matter of time before this kind of nonsense hits American shores. In the not too distant future, U.S. motorists are going to have speeding tickets mailed to their homes on account of fully-automated speed traps that will photograph the license plates and drivers of vehicles exceeding the speed limits on our highways. Already, I am seeing videocams mounted on highway overpasses. It's coming...
IBM developed Smart Box with UAE University last year.
The GPS-enabled devices will monitor drivers speed and give them a verbal warning if they creep over the speed limit. If they ingnore the warning, the smart box will wirelessly trasmit the cars speed, identity and location to the police who will promptly slam you (them) with a ticket.

Way cool ... ;-)
It is that sharp turn toward Mecca right before the shut off that worries me.
Sponsored by liberals everywhere "wanting to do it for the children" call is already starting. I want a bumper sticker on the front of my truck - any lib stuck out the burper/fender/grill would look good(I can't drive 55)!
Especially I am not laughing about Islam !!!
I Slam Islam! Period, end of argument !!! ;-))
Hmmm. GM. What have I heard about GM in the news recently?
Oh. Yeah. Their profits have turned to losses, and they seem to be going down the tubes (at least that is what the doomsday-loving media tell us). Yes, I know that the pension liabilities are a big problem, but wouldn'ty it be funny if a bunch of people refused to buy GM cars because of the black boxes?
It's like Rosie O'Donnel and KMart. NRA-types did not bring down KMart, but I am sure their staying away helped KMart into bankruptcy.
Whoa there, Mr. IBM - what about the Gazillion Bucks given by Uncle Sam to develop sector suites for the FAA? Ten years, a Gazillion down a rat-hole, and IBM threw up it's hands, said 'we can't make it work' and walked away without ever delivering a single piece of hardware.
I have experience with IBM too. Ditto stylin's comments.
Maybe we are just two isolated instances........
Another great reason to buy a '58 classic vette instead of a new one.
The car is already built.

With advanced tracking and
monitoring capabilities, the new
'Smart Box' can also be integrated
with the local traffic department
to issue speeding tickets after
several 'voice' warnings.
IBM Drives Traffic Safety in UAE
(Snip:)
This is crucial for UAE, a country
with a high accident rate, IBM said
in a statement.
According to UAE government traffic
studies, one person is injured every
two hours, and one person dies
pproximately every 15 hours on UAE roads.
These are both alarming statistics
for a country with only two million drivers.
I know the UAE only export is oil
and the reserves are dwindling. A state
controlled micro cars would make their
oil reserves last longer and that
is their agenda.
INCOME
Now when IBM sells this technology
to the rest of the world government
don't be surprised when your
new mandated car has these new
SAFETY FEATURES.
When I was a kid this was the future...
FUTURAMA!
The General Motors 1964 Futurama
exhibit did have these cars
and freedoms in mind.
I thought us Americans would have flying cars and
housekeeper robots in the early 21st century.
Well, its all IslamoBinRama today and I'm sick of it.
It was cheap, greasy, and primitive. At least the Coke pavilion had a point.
