A Kinnelon boy was bitten on the face and hands Friday as he fended off an angry pit bull that attacked his smaller Jack Russell terrier.
A passing deliveryman called police, who saved the 11-year-old boy from the bedlam that ensued as he tried to protect his pet, Emily, from a pit bull named Spike, in the driveway of Spike's home at 43 Lincoln Road.
The boy was treated for puncture wounds to his face and hands and was recuperating at home Friday night. Emily was clinging to life at the Kinnelon Veterinary Hospital and said to be in "very guarded" condition.
The pit bull was being held at the Kinnelon animal shelter after what an animal control officer described as a "provoked attack." The shelter plans to return the animal to the owner, who could not be reached for comment Friday.
The boy was riding his bicycle on Lincoln Road around 11:30 a.m., with Emily and another of his pets, a sheepdog named Chaplin, following him. The pit bull, sheltered in an outdoor cage, broke through a hole in his home's chain-link fence, then rushed after the terrier and wrapped its jaws around it, police said. The boy's bicycle helmet was found near the cage.
The terrier managed to wriggle free. Somehow, the boy grabbed the wounded pet and tucked her under his legs. He crouched in the driveway for several minutes, fending off the snarling pit bull with his hands, police said.

I think people who own dangerous dogs should make sure that their fence is secure, not let the dog out, or if they take it for a walk ( as in some other pit bull stories), they should have a strong muzzle on it.
Experiment Ping
It seems like the software didn't pull it -- we'll see if a human will.
But I don't see why they should, as I said, it's a legit story.
You could post a link to your story here, since it's related topic.
In many communities pit bulls are an outlawed breed. I think it is time to either genetically dilute their vicous nature or just plain out law em period. They are good for nothing.
fyi..
I bet the Jack went for the Pit - Jacks think they are Great Danes.
They certainly shouldn't be allowe loose.
Here is a story about some pitbulls getting lose, getting into someone else's backyard and attacking a person in his own back yard.
Pit bulls attack man

Mike McAughey faced off against two pit bulls Thursday afternoon and won.
The incident occurred at 1:30 p.m. at McAughey's house, 2524 14th St. Road., in Greeley. Three pit bulls, which had escaped from a house at 2518 14th St. Road, had spent the morning roaming the neighborhood and entered McAughey's backyard about 1:15 p.m.
McAughey heard the pit bulls when his German shepherd began barking. He called animal control and ordered his dog inside the house. Then he went out front to enjoy the spring day and wait for animal control. He was talking to his girlfriend on the phone while sitting next to his Dodge Durango in his driveway when the pit bulls arrived.
First, a female pit bull began barking at McAughey. Then a "thick male" pit bull arrived and joined in barking. McAughey decided to retreat to his garage, but the dogs followed him.
The two light-colored dogs continued barking and quickly eliminated any personal space McAughey had left. There he sat in his wheelchair with two angry pit bulls at each side.
The bout had begun.
"When he began to chew on my arm I knew it was time to drop the phone and find a weapon," said McAughey, who has a sport cast on his right wrist.
The pit bull was being held at the Kinnelon animal shelter after what an animal control officer described as a "provoked attack." The shelter plans to return the animal to the owner, who could not be reached for comment Friday.
Kinnelon was treating the incident as a dogfight that got out of hand - and not the case of a vicious animal that needed to be destroyed, said Kinnelon Animal Control Officer Jim DeStephano.
"It was a dogfight, and this kid was in the middle of it," DeStephano said. "It was more like a provoked attack."

"Pit bull breaks chain twice to attack mechanic, police officer"
"The boy was riding his bicycle on Lincoln Road around 11:30 a.m., with Emily and another of his pets, a sheepdog named Chaplin, following him. The pit bull, sheltered in an outdoor cage, broke through a hole in his home's chain-link fence, then rushed after the terrier and wrapped its jaws around it, police said. The boy's bicycle helmet was found near the cage. "
I don't understand how they can call this a provoked attack, when the kid was just riding his bicycle on the street with his dogs, when the pitbull broke out of its backyard and attacked them.
The owner of the pitbull should be seriously fined, for allowing to have that hole in his fence, the pitbull used to get out, and he should also pay for medical care of the boy, as well as some additional restitution to the boy.
I agree. This happens way too often. Just recently in my community a small child was attacked inside a home he was visiting when the family's pit bull managed to get out of a bedroom where it was being kept. The child faces several more surgeries and has bad scars. They should just be outlawed.
The Jack Russell probably attacked the Pit Bull...
That would explain why the dog fight took place in the street---and why the pit bull had to dig out of it's fenced-in enclosure.
oh, wait...never mind.
I am the last person in the world to defend a pit bull, but I do know from personal experience that terriers are extremely aggressive.
..
THIS is a Pit Bull:

No thanks. I'll keep my darling little long haired Chiwawa !!! ;-))

Indeed . . . that would happen in a sane society . . .
BUT . . . !!! ;-))
Kind of like saying "There's been a lot of weather happening lately" ;~D
I agree but try to tell that to the people who walk their pit bulls who are not leashed, as they do here in this neighborhood. Think I'll make a call to Animal Control.
