Shortly after the 2000 election, Colin Powell was the great hero of the new administration. As time passed, however, his SoS positions became less favorable, and he was not held by many of the party faithful in quite as high esteem.

Jumping on a 'name' bandwagon can become problematic. Look at all the 'names' who have lost their gloss over time.

Yes, Colin Powell was a temporay hero but he became a
willing accomplice of the intransigent State Dept.
bureaucracy and undermined Bush on Iraq (including by
permitting selective leaks). It is no accident that he
is now a darling of the Left. Condi Rice would not be the
worst nominee but she's certainly not the best. Frankly,
the Republicans are so anxious to chip away at the black
vote some would nominate Sharpton if he called himself
conservative. The exception is Bush -- he's willing to
submit to a foreign invasion of illegals for the Hispanic
vote. When does this nonsense end? Have we conservatives
become a bunch of trendy teeny boppers looking for the
next "pop" politician?
